About the Author
Stephen Tharrett, M.S., is currently a management consultant and public speaker in the health/fitness club industry, providing club owners with an extensive array of services that include strategic planning, business, planning, employee development, marketing and facility and design. Prior to entering the consulting field, Stephen spent over 20 years working with ClubCorp, a billion-dollar Texas-based company that owned and operated private clubs, including business clubs, country clubs, and resorts and sports clubs.

He has served on the board of the International Health, Racquet and Sportclub Association (IHRSA), was a member of IRHSA’s membership committee, and was IHRSA president from 1996 to 1997. He has served as a contributing editor for the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Health Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines, and has served the ACSM in several other capacities, including being a member of the ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal editorial advisory board, as well as chairing both the committee on health and fitness and the marketing sub-committee for the education and certification committees. He has been a member of the advisory boards for Star Trac and StairMaster. Finally, Stephen has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Arlington and a lecturer at the IHRSA Institute of Professional Management.

The book summarizes the results of recent and established research, including studies conducted at the Institute of Physics of Mining Processes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, headed by the author. Key topics covered include rock mass in multi-component compressive stress fields and phase conditions of methane in coal. The book also examines state-of-the-art instrumentation and physical methods of analysis, among them x-ray analysis of coal structures combined with computer simulation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy combined with gas chromatography.

Bridging the gap between the academic theory and the practice of coal mining, the book proposes novel methods to predict rock mass condition, control gas-dynamic phenomena, and estimate safe mining loads. A useful reference for scientists, technicians, and engineers working in the coal industry, it also offers an overview of the physics of mining processes for students pursuing careers in the field.

About the Author

Anatoly Dmitriyevich Alexeev is the leading earth scientist in Ukraine. Dr. Alexeev has combined a career in physics, chemistry, and engineering with teaching, research, and writing more than 300 publications, 14 monographs, and 50 patents. He developed the theory of gas absorption and emission in porous media and an applied approach to extreme states or rocks and rock massifs.

Dr. Alexeev’s areas of interest in basic and applied research include the physics of rocks and mining processes, radiophysics, extreme states of solids, and physic-chemical mechanics. He studied the effects of surfagents on stress states of rocks and implemented surfagents to prevent outbursts in coal mines. He also applied nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to studies of methane–coal systems and developed new methods and technologies for predicting mine outbursts.

Dr. Alexeev is a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a member of the Academy of Mining Sciences of Ukraine, and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Alexeev was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine (1996), the A.A. Skotchinsky prize (1990), and the I. Puluy prize (2001). He was designated an Honored Miner of Ukraine (1996) and received several President’s medals in all three classes for "Valiant Labour," "Miner’s Glory," and "Miner’s Valour."

About the Author
Odessa Sawyer is an illustrator from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She works mainly in digital mixed media, utilizing digital painting, photography, and traditional pen and ink. Odessa's work has graced book covers from many top publishing houses, and she has also done work for various film and television projects, posters, and album covers. Highly influenced by fantasy, fairy tales, fashion, and classic horror, Odessa's work celebrates a whimsical, dreamy and vibrant quality.

Beth Bracken's books have been translated into multiple languages, and her picture books have won the 2011 Creative Child Award; the 2012 Eric Hoffer Book Award Grand Prize; and the 2013 Mom's Choice Gold Award. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her husband, Steve, and their children. When she's not reading, writing, or editing books, Beth spends most of her time knitting endlessly while watching reruns of old TV shows and drinking lots of tea.

Kay Fraser is from Buenos Aires. She left home at eighteen and moved to North Dakota―basically the exact opposite of Argentina. These days, she lives in Minneapolis, designs books, writes, makes tea for her husband, and drives her daughters to their dance lessons.

Short Entertaining, Read

Wish: Faerieground is the first book on a series of four about Soli and Lucy. I enjoyed it.

Lucy is light, while Soli is dark. They are thirteen, best friends and complete opposites. They have played in the woods all their lives; it's their secret shortcut, even though Lucy's mom has warned them to not go there. One day, Soli makes a wish that has rather big repercussions.

Beautiful art!
This is the start of their adventure, as they encounter very different fates while in Faerieground. These faeries are not the Tinker Bell type, they are quite scary and mean. Especially Queen Calandra, she is awful.

At the end, Lucy and Soli turned out to be good friends and look out for each other, trying hard to do everything possible to overcome the mess they got themselves into. Kheelan is also a faery, but he seems to be a good one and he took an instant liking to Soli. Since the book is not lengthy, the characters were a little hard to get to know, mainly because we are told about them and their relationship, instead of shown, for instance by the use of flashback or dialogue.

Faerieground is really easy to read and it's short. In fact, I found it too short, but I understand that more is to come in the series. The story is told from alternating points of view, in the first person from Lucy and Soli's perspective. The plot is simple and a bit predictable, but I'm eager to see what happens next. One of the best things about the book is the amazingly beautiful illustrations. Overall, Wish: Faerieground is a short, entertaining read.
