About the Author
Matthew B. Robinson is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at Appalachian State University (ASU). He earned his Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the Florida State University in 1997. Robinson teaches and does research in the areas of criminological theory, the war on drugs, capital punishment, and injustices of the criminal justice system. He has published more than 50 pieces of research, including 6 books: Justice Blind? Ideals and Realities of American Criminal Justice (Prentice-Hall, 2002, 2005), Why Crime? An Integrated Systems Theory of Antisocial Behavior (Prentice-Hall, 2004), Spatial Analysis of Crime: Theory and Practice (with Derek Paulsen, Allyn & Bacon, 2004), Lies, Damned Lies, and Drug War Statistics (State University of New York Press, 2007), and Death Nation: The Experts Explain American Capital Punishment (Prentice-Hall, 2008). He also has served as Board Member and President of the Southern Criminal Justice Association (SCJA). Robinson was awarded the William C. Strickland Outstanding Young Scholar Award from Appalachian State University in 2002.

My biggest issue with this text is that the datasets ...

My biggest issue with this text is that the datasets for the practice exercises are not fully updated / missing, therefore, you cannot follow along with the text's crime mapping problems. After pointing out this issue directly to the authors, and receiving an initial acknowledgement of my email, they stopped responding to my requests and most importantly never provided the updated data that should accompany the text.

Hilary Marlow explores some of the thinking in the history of the Christian tradition that has contributed to such a perception, before discussing a number of approaches to reading the Old Testament from an ecological perspective.

Through a detailed exegetical study of the texts of the biblical prophets Amos, Hosea, and First Isaiah, Marlow examines the portrayal of the relationship between YHWH the God of Israel, humanity and the non-human creation. In the course of this exegesis, searching questions emerge: what are the various understandings of the non-human creation that are present in the text? What assumptions are made about YHWH's relationship to the created world and how he acts within it? And what effect do the actions and choices of human beings have on the created world?

Following this close textual study, Marlow examines the problem of deriving ethical norms from the biblical text and discusses some key ethical debates in contemporary environmental theory. The book explores the potential contribution of the biblical exegesis to such debates and concludes by proposing an inter-relational model for reading the Old Testament prophets in the light of contemporary environmental ethics.

About the Author

Hilary Marlow is a Research Associate in theology and the environment at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, St Edmunds College, Cambridge. She also teaches biblical Hebrew to undergraduates in the Faculty of Divinity and sometimes lectures on the biblical prophets for the Cambridge Theological Federation. She completed her doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 2007. This is her first full-length monograph. She has a longstanding and close connection with the Christian environmental charity A Rocha, and is currently on the operations team of the John Ray Initiative.

And it seems bizarre for a book which apparently writes so passionately about the need to lower our impact on the earth not to have a kindle version for all the people who now read that way.
Perhpas there's an argument that we shouldn't have gone down the e-reader path ecologically, but it's well and truly trodden now.

Look, this is not SUPPOSED to surplant the King James Version[which has spurious translations, as anyone who has read the Greek knows.But i digress] This is an interesting and faithful attempt to re-interpert Scripture ,much in the same way the version" Good News for Modern Man" did 35 years ago. Reaching oput to people who normally feel excluded is a GOOD thing, especially those on the "margins" whom most congregations would hardly welcome. A good effort, an act of kindness by the author.Well Done

Great for first time readers of the Bible

This is not meant to be a study Bible. This is meant to be a Bible that gets people, who would normally not read the Bible, reading the Bible. My daughter's boyfriend read this from cover to cover and LOVED it. He had never read the Bible before. This got him interested and understanding things in his own language and now he is ready to switch to a study Bible. I heard the author speak many years ago and he explained that this was not a "translation" it was a paraphrase much like the Message.

From A Computer Science Student...

I absolutely love this book. I've browsed through many computer programming/computer science books before this one, and found this one the best introductory book by far for many reasons. For one, the book moves at a quick yet manageable pace, so I felt like I able to move quickly enough not to get bored yet still absorb the material. Honestly, and I'd never thought I'd say this about a textbook for a class, but I found this to be a page-turner!

There is a convienient Quick Reference serving as an Appendix. It quickly lists the operators, functions, techniques, etc, presented i each chapter, so I didn't need to dig back through the chapters when a concept for function name slipped my mind.

MOST importantly for me are the exercises at the end of each chapter. Sure, most books have sample-code, too, but this book gives you a fair number of problems to solve using the tools you have just learned.

So, if you are new to computer science and interested in learning to program in any language, I'd STRONGLY recommend this book. It's a great introduction to Python, but it's also a GREAT introduction to computer programming concepts.

Absolutely phenomenal textbook for the uninitiated. I assisted in teaching an introductory programming course using the 2nd edition of this book for two years, I could not recommend the book any higher as the first formal exposure someone should have to programming to ease them in to the subject, and better prepare them for tackling their first system language. The used copy I purchased from this seller was pretty much unscathed, just a few errant marks in the margins, a couple of dog eared pages, and a moderately worn spine--perfectly serviceable condition for a personal copy.

Absolutely the best book for learning Python

I have several Python programming books and scores of printed out online tutorials and documentation. This one is the best of the bunch (with the Absolute Beginner title coming in 2nd) because it explains everything a beginning programmer needs to know and has enough exercises and challenges to make it interesting. A lot of the other titles jump right in and seem kind of haphazard in their approach. This one builds topic upon topic, using what was learned previously to help tackle the next area. An excellent book!

and for any medical MD to recommend it tells me that MD is doing a good ...

I just ordered this book, gave it a 4 before even seeing it. WHY, because i know what MMS is, and for any medical MD to recommend it tells me that MD is doing a good service. My husband and I took MMS everyday for the first year, we are now in year three, we take it Mon-Fri, we have not been sick one day since using it. My husband use to be sick at least twice a year, very reluctantly last time he started to get sick he agreed to try it, next day he was basically well and decided to do another day just in case. then we started the daily dose. Please read Jim Humble's books on MMS. I just want to see what this book adds to what I already know. MMS has nothing to do with medical drugs, in fact the FDA wants to limit your knowledge about MMS.

Not SO great.

I was not impressed. I have little respect for the FDA, Big Pharms or Government. I prefer healthy alternatives. I am not for all the big money involved with drugs being used in the Medical field.
