About the Author
A. A. Milne was an English novelist and playwright born in 1882. A student of H. G. Wells during public school, Milne went on to study mathematics in Cambridge. During his time there, Milne frequently contributed to the college s student magazine, Granta, and was so successful that he was offered a job at the British humour magazine Punch. Milne s son, Christopher Robin, was born in 1920. After writing a poem for him entitled Teddy Bear, Milne began publishing children s stories about Christopher Robin and his stuffed animals, including his bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. Milne s children s books, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, have since become beloved classics that have been adapted into the famous Disney franchise. Milne died in 1956 at the age of 74.

Vintage British humor

This appears to be a collection of magazine or newspaper columns written around 1912. So if you enjoy dated, "veddy British" humor,it's a pleasant read. The style is similar to some of Agatha Christie's early mysteries; perhaps she enjoyed Milne's writing as well. If you enjoyed the original Pooh stories and haven't been poisoned by Disneyfication, you'll like the gentle satire.

Considered a standard text for etching and engraving, I felt it left a bit to be desired. I much prefered "The Art of Etching" by E.M. Lumsden. Considering the era it written, it seems to be a bit more focused on the mindset of art and experimental creation as opposed to straight forward technical plates.

Big value for little money!

This book is stocked as reference in a classroom situation. Lots of detailed information on many techniques in an easy to follow manner along with detailed photographs. Detailed recipes for etching solutions and description of appropriate use. Great for the novice but also valuable as a reference. Lots of valuable information for a small price.

An outstanding text

Leaf's text covers a remarkable range of intaglio techniques. The first chapters cover the basics of tools, printing papers, and setting up a workshop. Next, she covers the basics of familiar printmaking techniques, etching (including soft ground), aquatint, and some interesting variations. This section also includes recipes for inks and grounds - not encyclopedic, but a basic set of materials for different techniques. Leaf covers each technique methodically, describing its goals, materials, and process. The end of each chapter offers an especially helpful "what went wrong" section.

Following the basics, Leaf continues with some elaborations, including multiple layers of aquatint and viscosity printing. She also lays out some unusual techniques, including collographs and "tuilegraphs." That's a fascinating variation on linoleum prints, but based on slightly different materials and very distinctive ways of creating the image in the printing surface.

Despite its strengths, this book has a few significant weak spots. Safety standards aren't always what a current reader would hope. For example, discussion of the corrosive etchants talks about flushing eyes with water in case of an acid spash, but doesn't mention goggles. Elsewhere, she mentions protective gloves in the text but omits those gloves from the photos that show the process under discussion. And, when it comes to disposing of spent etchant, I can't agree with pouring "neutralized acid on the ground where you don't expect anything to grow." On the positive side, techniques are profusely illustrated, showing both techniques and finished products.

Those problems just mean that the reader should approach this with a critical eye, not avoid it completely. There's just too much good here to give up.

A basic primer on Using Research

Research into how people think and act is an important part of sociology. Research into criminology and criminal justice is an important part of sociological research and the impact that criminals have on society is important because criminals have a bigger impact on the smooth running of society than the normal working person. Perhaps more important is understanding how research is done and what it can mean in your working life.

This book describes how sociological research is done, but it stresses how to apply and better understand research that has been done and published. It further compares criminal investigation to sociological research because many of the same rules apply. For instance jumping to conclusions based on past experiences or personal prejudices may well cause false conclusions to be reached causing tragic mistakes.

Most sociological research is statistical. We want to know such things as what percentage of crimes are committed by people previously found guilty of a crime. Knowing that police are people, we want to know how police are biased on racial, religious, or gender differences. As such, this book covers lot on using statistics to summarize data that was collected by the research.

Love the Content But Too Many Typos!!

This is a wonderful textbook in many regards. The way the material is laid out makes it easy to assimilate new information because there is quite a bit of repetition. I particularly liked the first chapter in the way it crafted the organization scheme for the rest of the book and presented the patient history taking method very clearly. However, I find that there is an especially large number of typos in this book. When I read a textbook, I expect to find one or two outstanding, obvious typos. In Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination I have found probably ten to twenty typos already and I am only as far as chapter 10. There are probably one to two per chapter, which makes me wonder who was transcribing the book. Was this dictated by the authors and then transcribed by people who did not have a background in medicine? I think this is unhelpful for new students to the field because it causes confusion. For instance, in one case a basic rule for how to write bacteria names was not followed. In the same sentence both Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus were referenced like this: "Streptococcus pyogenes and S. aureus". This leads the student to the erroneous assumption that the second bacteria also belongs to the Streptococcus genus. Both of these names should have been fully written out, as this unnecessary and inappropriate shorthand leads to confusion. I also believe that due to the fact that the photographs make use of models instead of real doctors, some of the photos that demonstrate how to position your hands when conducting a physical examination are inaccurate. Some of them do not match up with what the description is showing. In just a couple of other examples the spelling of disorders was incorrect and the measurement of blood cell size was way off (mm instead of um). I would hope that in the next edition many of these typos and errors could be corrected.

Rethink buying the book

I purchased the electronic version of this handbook for my IPad thinking that it would make life easier to port around said small IPad as opposed to the gianormous books for class. What a waste of money. The digital versions of the textbook and its handbook were cobbled together by an obviously throwback corporation out to make a quick buck. Just because its digital doesn't mean they didn't cut corners. Key things to be aware of - 1. its not a pdf so page numbers are not present and it's difficult to identify content because of the lack of clear indexes and table of content which is so important for a student or if you're looking for something specific. 2. Content for sale or for view have links to electronic pages that do not work. 3. Content that would have been available in the hardcopy version was not included in the digital version from what I could glean, images, paging, etc were off so that the digital version was actually a hinderance to studying! 4. It costs almost as much as the hardcopy. At least if it were a hard copy I could return it but since it's digital and costs almost as much as the hardcopy (and you can't return it) my suggestion would be to save your money and just buy the book. If I had known I wouldn't have bothered getting the digital version since now I have to go back and buy the hardcopies as well.

Physical Examination Is Adequate for Needs

This book is good... not great. It gives long lists of instructions about how to perform examinations, instead of breaking things down. It does have special sections on infants, children, pregnant women and the elderly. I am studying to be a Pediatric NP and this helped me focus on what parts of the assessment will really pertain to me.

Excellent Methodology!

I am a consultant in the area of knowledge management and data modeling, and I have read all the major books on the topic of data quality, and this book is, by far, the best treatement of the subject.
Enterprise Knowledge Management is a great handbook for both the manager and the practitioner - Loshin deals with the personal and political aspects of data ownership, buildingan ROI model for data cleansing, and a concise methodology about how to measure levels of data quality.
I have heard speeches by a handful of the major speakers in the area, and my impression is that they are willing to tell you to go and measure data quality, or to talk about data quality issues, but they would be hard-pressed to actually solve the problems. From reading this book, it is clear that Loshin is an expert in this area, and that he has not only dealt with the high level aspects of data management but also has experience in the trenches.
This book is perfect for both manager and technical people dealing with data warehousing or data migration projects.

Its all in the Details

Most of the literature on Data Quality focuses on the challenges of creating and maintaining a data warehouse. Thankfully, for those of us trying to improve the integrity of the information in our OLTP databases, this book presents a methodology which is not specific to any one data environment.
This book is packed with lists of cases to consider for each step of the methodology. Each case is nicely documented. Actually, much of the book is taken filled with the documentation for each case, which may cause a person to lose sight of the methodology that is being presented.
I am person who prefers to learn concepts. I am not as interested in memorizing details. Hence, I would read this book, skipping most of the documentation in the lists, instead focusing on understanding the methodology. Thereafter, I would use this book as a reference when needing information on a particular step of the methodology.

Data Quality in the Real World

As a data warehouse practitioner for over 12 years, I was recently challenged at my current employer to help assemble a global data quality team and process. Having done much of the work before on a piecemeal basis, we made steady progress.
When I received my copy of "Enterprise Knowledge Management," I found two important things:
1. We were definitely on the right track, and
2. There were some things we had missed.
David Loshin has put together an excellent field guide to all aspects of data quality. It is very easy to understand, and contains practical, effective suggestions. Most importantly, it is a true "soup to nuts" guide to data quality. There is very little that you might need to improve your company's "knowledge quotient" that you will not find here.
I have heartily recommended this book to a number of people when asked about data warehousing and data quality. You'll not find a better handbook anywhere.

What a revoltin' development this is

If economic development in developing countries is a topic of interest, Easterly's book should be required reading. He examines the various approaches that have been tried over the past 50 or so years to alleviate the chronic poverty afflicting the developing world. The writing is fluid and easy to follow and is generally an exceptionally good read and even worth a second or third. He is at his best when picking apart the solutions introduced under different schools of thought in the development community, but he does this with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, so should be taken with a grain of salt regarding the full policy implications of his conclusions. While some of his ideas have a few holes, they are forgivable as long as he is not taken as gospel on the subject. His basic premise of "question what you think you know" is a solid starting point for anyone interested in the field. For a solidly-written contrary perspective, see Jeffrey Sachs' "The End of Poverty."

this is an excellent book written in simple language,yet explaining the concept clearly. i read an older version of this book in 1995 and in 2013 when i needed to refresh my concept i again took help of this classic by dr maurice levi. i consider this book along with international economics by kennan and multinational corporations by dunning as excellent combination for international management course.

The protagonist of this complex fantasy is young Lyra Belacqua, a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Oxford University. But it quickly becomes clear that Lyra's Oxford is not precisely like our own--nor is her world. For one thing, people there each have a personal dæmon, the manifestation of their soul in animal form. For another, hers is a universe in which science, theology, and magic are closely allied: As for what experimental theology was, Lyra had no more idea than the urchins. She had formed the notion that it was concerned with magic, with the movements of the stars and planets, with tiny particles of matter, but that was guesswork, really. Grade 7 Up?A novel set in London and in the Arctic regions of a world that is somewhat like our own. Lyra, apparently an orphan, lives among the scholars at Jordan College, Oxford. She becomes aware of a nefarious plot to steal children and transport them to the far north. As Lyra is drawn deeper and deeper into this mystery, she finds that the children are being made to suffer terribly. What she does not?and must not?know is that she is the keystone in an ancient prophecy. Her destiny is to save her world and to move on into a parallel universe. She dives headlong into harrowing adventures, totally unaware of her importance. She also discovers the identity of her parents, who are major players in the unfolding drama. In Lyra's world, every human has a daemon, an animal that is sort of an extension of one's soul. This fact is central to the story as the church, the academic world, and the government seek to understand the significance of the phenomenon. Also important, but never fully explained, is a substance called Dust. This is a captivating fantasy, filled with excitement, suspense, and unusual characters. The armored bears are wonderful and more interesting than most of the humans. There is some fine descriptive writing, filled with the kind of details that encourage suspension of disbelief. The story line moves along at a rapid clip, but flags when it delves into philosophical matters. The ending is less than satisfying, but serves as a lead-in to part two of the series. Lyra rules

I liked this book even more the second time around. Being able to take thing slow because I know what is going to happen makes it possible to catch the nuance that I missed the first time around. I loved the witches and wished there were more about them.

Pullman seems to love his characters and lovingly describes them and what happens to them. That is why I find it puzzling to read of the actions of Lord Azriel and Mrs Coulter. No explanation is given for their differing names and objectives. Perhaps it is explained in later books.

Lyra moves from her artless naivete of an child running around the campus of an alternative Oxford University to bearing the burdens of an adult. Each episode causes her to grow and expand while maintaining her childlike innocence. At time the knowledge is almost too much for her to bear. She is helped by her demon Pantalaimon, whose courage makes it possible for Lyra to do what is necessary.

There is more to be found than can be done in two readings. Like other great stories this one requires many readings to uncover its true meaning.

What a great start!!

Ahhhhhhh!!!!! I had skimmed this when I was a kid looking for something to fill the emptiness that was finishing the latest Harry Potter and I didn't like it. All these years later I listened to it and it is the bomb!!!!!! Love it!!!!!!! The movie didn't do it justice! Highly recommend!!!! In Audio too!

Imaginative and compelling

I've read some claiming this is a book for children or young teens, which I frankly think is snobbishly dismissive. While its suitable for that audience, it is very imaginative and though the lead character is a typical precious little girl, I had a very difficult time putting the book down. The world Pullman creates has a lot of color and character and after finishing reading it I was left wishing we could have Daemons (loosely translated: Familiars) similar to how everyone in his world has. The author doesn't do the usual tactic of making ever chapter's end a cliffhanger to draw you into the next one, rather its his cadence and implied threat being deeper into the next chapter that teases you to read just one more if you feel like it, and I found it a lot more effective than the breakneck chapter doorways that many authors resort to in order to keep the pages turning.

One of the key elements of any story I feel is the villain, and here Pullman did a outright great job for readers of adult or younger audiences, they have shades and facets to their character that made me curious about them and interested in seeing how they view the world, and how the heroine reacts to them and their designs is both believable and engaging. The only criticism I have is sometimes the lead character Lyra is a little too typically precocious in her behavior and she's more tenacious than she is bright. There are a lot of subtle layers to this tale however, its creativity and the philosophy behind its physics is quite engaging and worth its time to read, and no, the movie didn't do the book a fraction of the justice it deserves.
