An excellent source of Jewish history

This book was used as the textbook assigned to me when I took a high school Jewish history course in a private school. It is an outstanding resource. It may be a bit dry, but it is comprehensive and accurate. More educators should use it as a resource.

Great Jewish History by a Jewish Historian

This is a wonderful history of the Jews, done by a Jewish historian. Before I came to this book, I read A History of the Jews by Johnson, which gave me a really good factual understanding of Jewish history. But Grayzel's volume goes into the real meat of the old royal court history and the signifigance of the different parties involved in the successive revolutions under Roman rule. Why did the Jews rebel so many times, inflicting countless casualties on their populace? The extemists who could not stand Hellenization, and the Hellenizers who wanted to get rid of the Jewish religion altogether, created a struggle that would lead the ultimate destruction of Israel and dispersal of the Jews.

Overall, I highly recommend this work as a fine addition to the Jewish history fold.

Excellent introduction, good overview on applications

This book can be divided into three logical parts. The first part includes an overview of 4 dimensional physics (spacetime physics, chapter 1), an introduction to special relativity (physics in flat spacetime, chapters 2 to 7), an introduction to the tensor calculus (the mathematics of curved spacetime, chapters 8 to 15) and describes in detail Einstein's general theory of relativity (Einstein's geometric theory of relativity, chapters 16 to 22).
This first part is the best introduction to the theory of relativity I have ever read. The mathematics is introduced in a very comprehensive manner, there are lots of exercises where the reader can get used to the tensor calculus. The physical explanations are just brilliant and what is more important general relativity is introduced in the manner Einstein itself viewed it: as a geometric representation of gravity! Other books on this subject formulate general relativity only algebraically (like quantum theory) but this hides the importance of the idea that all gravitational effects can be extracted from the geometry of spacetime. The algebraic formulation may be regarded as more modern by some authors, it must be said however that no algebraic formulation managed to give more physical insight. The algebraic treatment tries to unify the view of general relativity and quantum field theory, but the physical discrepancies between the two theories remain unsolved.
The second part starts with the application of general relativity to stars (stars and relativity, chapters 23 to 26), goes on to the universe (the universe, chapters 27-30) and to black holes (gravitational collapse and black holes, chapters 31 to 34), and describes finally gravitational waves (gravitational waves, chapters 35 to 37) and experimental methods (experimental tests of general relativity, chapters 38 to 40).
This second part is a good overview, but many details of the computations of the applications are not shown. For the readers interrested in the details the two volume book by Zel'dovich and Novikov "Stars and Relativity"/"The Structure and Evolution of the Universe" is much better (but also much longer).
The third part finally describes the frontiers of general relativity (frontiers, chapters 41 to 44). Like part two it gives a good overview not showing many computational details.

Complete and excellent coverage

Gravitation gives a wonderful presentation of general relativity and the mathematics, primarily differential geometry, needed to understand it. Virtually every topic in classical general relativity is well covered. This book has so much to offer it's only possible to give a subjective view of the highlights and things that make the book unique.

It has a very good introduction to special relativity. This not only helps the reader understand special relativity, but it also gives practice with some of the mathematics needed for general relativity. I don't think many (any?) advanced general relativity books cover special relativity this thoroughly. One thing of special note is that there is a chapter devoted to special relativity and accelerated observers. The reason I think this is important is that it's a fairly common misconception that general relativity is needed to deal with acceleration, I wish more books had chapters like this.

The use of electromagnetism to illustrate the use of tensors is fairly extensive. This not only helps readers learn tensor analysis, but will also help them understand electromagnetism better.

Although black holes are covered in virtually every book on general relativity, the discussion here is much more thorough than usual. The material on the dynamics of the Schwarzschild solution is not a perspective most books give. In addition there is very nice coverage of stellar structure.

The exercises are great.

There is a lot of material on experimental general relativity.

The historical anecdotes are interesting.

There are an above average number of illuminating diagrams

The chapter on the Bianchi identities is exceptional, it also hints to the study of homology.

The initial-value problem is also exceptional.

Regge calculus is covered, an important topic in numerical relativity that is usually neglected.

The chapter on superspace is quite interesting. No, superspace in this sense doesn't have anything to do with supersymmetry. It's the space of solutions to general relativity, among other things this is important for quantum cosmology.

Pretty much any topic in general relativity one would be interested in has excellent coverage, with the possible exception of quantum gravity which only has a small amount of material.

The downsides? While I appreciate the coordinate fee notation, it's not that easy to use when working the exercises. I prefer the use of abstract index notation, at least for working problems with a pen and paper. Some of the diagrams early in the book might be a little confusing to readers without prior knowledge of differential geometry. This isn't really a downside, but this is a fairly advanced book and it might not be an ideal first book on general relativity (Schutz's book provides an excellent introduction and has a similar approach to this book).

In short, this is an exceptional book. Anybody with serious interest in learning general relativity would do well to study it.

The best book on General Relativity

No book comes close to this one in comprehensive detail about General Relativity. It includes great discussions and explanations of virtually all the ramifications of General Relativity, or opens options for more exploration. Math starts out at the Algebra level, and escalates far beyond my ability. Still much of the math can be followed by those like myself who have "math anxiety."

Anyone who aspires to understand this portion of Einstein's genius can gain enormously from it.

If you do not know these authors, they are at the forefront of enlarging the comprehension of General Relativity, and physics.

What makes this book interesting and useful is the quality of the man, not the strength of his business empire. "Connie" Hilton is a man of honor and principle, but he has much ambition, too. His fortunes have been made through hard work, calculated risks, and his "people skills." Comparing Conrad "Connie" Hilton to someone like Donald "The Donald" Trump shows how our culture has become more cheap and frivilous in the two generations that separate these hotel/real estate giants. Should be standard reading for entrepreneurial success; a timeless classic

I picked up Be My Guest by Conrad Hilton when I stayed at the Milwaukee Hilton several years ago. Guests of Hilton hotels in addition to finding the standard free soap and shampoo also receive a complimentary copy of Hilton's memoir, originally written in 1957. I started reading Be My Guest while aboard S. A. Agulhas II en route from Cape Town, South Africa to Tristan da Cunha. I finished the book on board and while I wanted to leave it in the ship's library when I had finished it, the lack of Internet on board, both on my way to Tristan as well as coming back, precluded me from posting this review from the ship. Thus I have waited until my return to Cape Town to post this.

Be My Guest was an engaging story that I enjoyed reading each night. It was a can't-put-down book, wherein Hilton documented his family story, often with humorous anecdotes, from the courtship of his parents and his boyhood growing up in New Mexico to his founding of one of the greatest hotel chains worldwide.

Each of Hilton's parents instilled in him a guiding principle that he has followed all of his life. From his mother, Mary Laufersweiler Hilton, he learned the power of prayer and from his father Gus he learned the value of work. In addition to these principles Hilton added his own: that one must never be afraid to dream. And to dream big . And big is exactly how Conrad Hilton dreamt.

Hilton got his first taste of the hotel industry when a currency panic in October 1907 left his father nearly broke. His family soon realized that they had been literally sitting on a moneymaker:

"We had the biggest, ramblingest adobe house in New Mexico directly facing a railroad station on a main line. And we had my mother's cooking. This added up to only one thing--a Hilton Hotel."

Be My Guest had plenty of humorous moments and I can imagine Hilton himself laughing out loud as he recalled some moments from his childhood. I'll bet he had a good time writing (or dictating) his story. Having such a devoutly Catholic mother kept a young Connie always on his toes:

"Almost as much as going to church or playing hooky, I liked going down the road to talk with Charles Hislie, the carpenter, or Carl Jenks, the village blacksmith and dentist. Mr. Jenks shoed horses or pulled teeth, whichever service was required at the moment. My brother Carl, after an extraction, claimed that he used the same instruments for both operations, but I have no first-hand knowledge of that.
"As I seldom had a toothache I loved to hang around Mr. Jenks' emporium and smell the pungent hot smell and listen to the hammer ringing on the anvil. I also liked to hear Mr. Jenks cuss. He was very talented in that direction and to this day I believe he had as extensive a vocabulary as any man I ever met.
"This hero worship was rudely interrupted when an unsuitable word escaped my lips at dinner table. Mother was shocked. Gus paused in carving the roast only long enough to glare at me and say, 'You stay away from the smithy.' From that time I did, except on dental business when I was accompanied by my lady mother."

Mrs. Hilton also features in an amusing story after her son had made his fortune in the hotel business. She could not accustom herself to having others do for her what she had proudly always done herself:

"My mother, I might add, never did modernize her views on tipping. When she lived for some years at the El Paso Hilton, this was a source of some amusement and much conniving on the part of her children. I, myself, would take her twenty or thirty quarters with specific instructions that she was to give one or two to any bellboy, any waiter, anyone, indeed, who gave her special service, depending on the extra amount of trouble it gave him.

"'I'll try, Connie,' she'd say.
"And I would find out from my sister Helen that, as soon as my back was turned, she'd trot down to the cashier and have the quarters converted into dimes, with which she reluctantly rewarded any service she absolutely could not do herself. Ten cents remained all her life the most she could bring herself to tip."

Be My Guest traces Hilton's shift from buying banks to buying hotels. At first he took over older hotels and transformed them according to his vision. The Hilton empire of new hotels was not his immediate intention. Only after his frustration in having to renovate yet another older building did he consider starting to build his next hotel from the ground up.

It was however not a new hotel but the palatial Queen of all hotels, the Waldorf Astoria, that was his prime target for many years. Its prestige as the height of luxurious hotel accommodation and reputation for unparallelled service made it the diamond in the eye of the Big Apple. He dreamt of owning it one day, and this big dream of his would one day become true. Hilton wrote of his many offers and counteroffers, and offered his insights into the skills of negotiation and the honour in keeping your word with a handshake.

The Waldorf Astoria may be the Queen of his "dowager" hotels, yet he still had to revitalize it to meet Hilton standards. However even when confronted with a rather unfortunate reality of hotel ownership, Hilton can still elicit a smile:

"A wire from Carl at the Waldorf pinpointed this vague feeling. 'Fellow in 202 bumped himself off last night. After looking at his room I don't blame him. We have got to fix up those rooms.'
"I somehow doubted that the d�cor in 202 had driven the poor fellow to suicide. Unfortunately tired people, discouraged people have sought the impersonal solitude of a hotel for their unhappy business since time immemorial."

One of the pleasures of reading Be My Guest were its stories away from the wheeling and dealing and cornerstone laying. I was absorbed not only in the stories of Hilton's boyhood but also in the tales about his wives and children. Hilton's second marriage was to Zsa Zsa Gabor which in retrospect he could see "was doomed before it started". He recounted with heaving exasperation the countless times he tried to curb her spending habits:

"Glamour, I found, is expensive, and Zsa Zsa was glamour raised to the last degree. She also knew more days on which gifts could be given than appear on any holiday calendar. And then, of course, you could always give gifts because it was no special day at all and thereby transform it."

and:

"I have tried to instill sound business principles into my beautiful Circe, but I might as well have practiced on a statue in the park."

Be My Guest , being that it was published in 1957 at the end of the communist red scare of McCarthyism, ends its final chapters with Hilton vowing to fight communism. The anti-communist tone seems like a time warp of a read for today's reader, yet at the time the red menace was seen as a legitimate threat and proud Americans showed their patriotism by publicly fighting against it. To Hilton, his hotels bridged cultures by bringing the peoples of the world together as a united front against communism.

Hilton ends his book by listing his ten ingredients for successful living. His words of wisdom may help others realize their dreams. Herewith are the Hilton top ten:

Don't let your possessions possess you.
Don't worry about your problems.
Don't cling to the past.
Look up to people when you can--down to no one.

Old 'classic' book, a very nice read..

Hi guys,
I read this book because Dan Kennedy mentioned it in one of his marketing books..

It is a rags to riches story about Conrad Hilton, the guy who started Hilton hotels as we know it.
(This is before the days of Paris Hilton, Conrad was not born into money & fame!)

I was expecting to learn about entrepreneurial skills.. which I did a little, but I got more out of this book than I was expecting.. I got a cultural history lesson and an ethics lesson !

It was written in 1957 and covered Conrad's life in older times still, he talks about his parents, before the 1st world war.. What was lovely, was I got an insight into the old days, how people lived.. before technology as we know it today.. and before some cities were even built..

I never realised that hotels in the past didn't have room service, or getting a pickup from the station by taxi, 100 years ago, was unheard of.. stuff we take for granted now, but at one point didn't exist..

I feel I gained a renewed sense of ethics that may well help me in my own ventures in the future.. I'm not a Christian, and Connie does go on about the Christian 'God' alot.. occasionally too much, but never enough to really bother me, I understood where he was coming from, and was interesting to see how his faith helped him..

The first chapter, I found hard and boring to read, fortunately shortly after, I started getting into this book, and am really glad I read it.

There are as you can expect, a number of little pears of wisdom scattered throughout this book, and Im sure each reader will find their own nuggets.
It's not a big book.. 280+ pages, and a very nice little read.. Worth it in my opinion.

Amusing.

Dumbfounded by this sophisticated form of magic trick. At some point I find mentalism very creepy and dangerous. If used in the hands of wrong people it can harm people instead of amuse them with your skills. But to not quickly judge those who practice and use this, I decided to discover what mentalism is about. I fairly learned key things about the topic. And rested my case on the following: first, this book removed my old/uninformed judgement about those who use it. This skill can be used by anyone who has superior mind skills. The most basic mentalism skills can also be used for different occupations in different industries. Second, mentalism is not only for mere tricks, it is the ability to pass tricks as part of real human ability. So, if you would like to be the next David Blaine or Banacheck, be sure to check out this book and learn something valuable!

Bygrave is founder of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), a worldwide consortium of leading universities studying the impact of entrepreneurship on country and worldwide economies.

Andrew Zacharakis, BS, MBA, PhD, is The John H. Muller, Jr. Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship at Babson College. Renowned for his expertise in entrepreneurship, he has been quoted in such publications as the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times. He has also held investment banking and venture capital positions at the Cambridge Companies.

Has excellent chapters on business plans & pro-formas, but not the best guide to starting a business otherwise.

This book is dry and scholarly like a textbook as the title implies. It's not of much use to a small business or by any means covers a fraction of the things any business needs to know. The one area this bpbook is outstanding compared to others I've read about starting businesses, especially small ones is it's superior coverage of writing business plans and writing your pro-forma statement. For those two topics, it's essential reading unless you look for the info online.

Otherwise, Rieva Lesonsky's AWESOME "Start Your Own Business" is a TRUE encyclopedic resource covering virtually all aspects of starting any business, big or small, that is a "true MBA" on the subject. It covers many topics other books don't, especially this one, is an easy read that gets to the point, and only BOOKS on specific topics like e-commerce or accounting have much more to add.

This book seems to be taken from a similar text ...

This book seems to be taken from a similar text book by the authors and used in the Entrepreneurship 510 class at Devry University (just to be clear, my text book for this class is also by Bygrave and Zakarakis and simply entitled "Entrepreneurship" (my copy is a Devry ediion with the Devry cover on it but the text is actually from the authors above 2nd edition). Although the chapter layout is not quite the same, the text within it is the same. The ISBN on my book is 978-0-470-45037-6 (pbk).If you are planning on attending this school or notice that your Entrepreneurship class book has the same authors, I'd be wary of buying this book as I am certain that the information contained in both is extremely similar, just organized a little different.

Great Content

This content was the core of my Managing Growth Management MBA course. The info is invaluable. You can get almost as much out of reading this book as from taking a class. Make sure to go online and download the content that goes with the book. I used the financial statements downloaded for my business plan. I realized I needed the book while I was on vacation, only 2 days before class started and I had 2 chapters to read before class! Thanks to Amazon prime and the supplier, I got the book on time.
