Drinking in America: Our Secret History, by Susan Cheever

In DRINKING IN AMERICA, bestselling author Susan Cheever chronicles our national love affair with liquor, taking a long, thoughtful look at the way alcohol has changed our nation's history. This is the often-overlooked story of how alcohol has shaped American events and the American character from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.

Seen through the lens of alcoholism, American history takes on a vibrancy and a tragedy missing from many earlier accounts. From the drunkenness of the Pilgrims to Prohibition hijinks, drinking has always been a cherished American custom: a way to celebrate and a way to grieve and a way to take the edge off. At many pivotal points in our history-the illegal Mayflower landing at Cape Cod, the enslavement of African Americans, the McCarthy witch hunts, and the Kennedy assassination, to name only a few-alcohol has acted as a catalyst.

Some nations drink more than we do, some drink less, but no other nation has been the drunkest in the world as America was in the 1830s only to outlaw drinking entirely a hundred years later. Both a lively history and an unflinching cultural investigation, DRINKING IN AMERICA unveils the volatile ambivalence within one nation's tumultuous affair with alcohol.

Review
"A fascinating look at the place and function of alcohol throughout American history...[Cheever] offers a colorful portrait of a society that, like her own family, has been indelibly shaped by its drinking habits. An intelligently argued study of our country's 'passionate connection to drinking.'"―Kirkus Reviews

"Susan Cheever offers a humane but unsentimental view of our nation's inebriated past in DRINKING IN AMERICA. To excuse the pun, it's an addictive read full of wit and verve, revealing the deep influence of alcohol on many of our country's most significant moments, from the landing at Plymouth Harbour, to the Kennedy Assassination and Watergate. This is terrific social history but not as it's usually told, and all the better for it."―Amanda Foreman, author of Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire (winner of the Whitbread) and A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War

"Cheever's central observation is fascinating...The melting pot, it seems, was also a mixing bowl."―Publishers Weekly

"Insightful...well-researched and well-developed...An engrossing, in-depth examination of the profound ways alcohol and drinking have shaped and contributed to American history."―Shelf Awareness

"Cheever is full of such shocking and often delightful revelations of a history we never learned in school."―Newsday

"I can't stop raving (soberly!) about Susan Cheever's new book... It is both enlightening and frightening. A brilliant and important addition to our understanding of what goes wrong and what can continue to go wrong in a world dominated by the most deadly legal liquid ever invented."―Judy Collins

"Compelling...[a] brisk drinker's companion to US history, which runs a black light over the archives to ask: who was loaded, and why did it matter?... It's the fourth of Wilson's famous 12 steps that made it common practice for sober folk to dig into their own pasts in order to articulate the role of alcohol - to create a 'searching and fearless moral inventory' - and with DRINKING IN AMERICA, Cheever submits the US to a similar investigation. Along the way, we see a country struggling to negotiate its freedoms, nurtured by alcohol and undone by it as well....This approach can be illuminating, turning those sepia-toned historical figures in wigs into uncertain young men with tankards of rum in their hands."―Los Angeles Review of Books

"Cheever serves up a sober cocktail of American history...offers up sideways views that are intriguing."―Associated Press

"Full of compelling ideas...Cheever is smart, perceptive and disciplined...Her Nixon chapter in particular is alternately horrifying and delightful, and paints a compelling picture of the monstrous complexity of a 'great man.'"―Buffalo News

"Vivid...some of the book's most affecting moments arrive when Cheever discusses her family's drinking problems. "―The San Francisco Chronicle

"Full of fascinating details...this book is an important and highly entertaining step in the right direction."―Women's Voices for Change

"Cheever addresses serious subjects with casual and at times humorous prose, making this book surprisingly fun to read. You won't find this booze-filled version of American history in any textbooks, but as with any good barroom conversation, you'll learn just as much."―Kansas City Star

"A unique cultural tour."―BookTrib

"Packed with the liquor-soaked legacy of our country...[Cheever] presents a chronicle of the United States that has, to my knowledge, never been attempted. And it is a riveting, revisionist take on so many great events and people...fascinating, unusual history."―The Palm Beach Post

"Goes down like a smooth glass of wine after a long day...Whether you're a drinker or a teetotaler, if you like a wee nip of history, then here's the book you want."―The Bookworm Sez

"A highly readable, in-your-face look at not only the destructive power of alcohol in America, but the strange way it shaped our history."―San Antonio Express-News

"If you're looking for a sobering introduction to drunk history, this is the book for you."―Toronto Star

"At once fascinating and slightly disturbing."―The Oklahoman

"DRINKING IN AMERICA at times has many shocking revelations of the role alcohol has played in our country that is a great addition to the legends of this nation."―Midwest Book Review

"This is Drunk History, but thoroughly researched and soberly elucidated."―The Portland Mercury

"Cheever lays bare something many of us know intimately: 'alcoholism is a family disease,' she writes, and its roots in the American family run deep."―Boston Globe

"[A] cockeyed retelling of the American story."―The Week

"A riveting, revisionist take on so many great events and people... fascinating, unusual history... her research is spot on."―The New York Social Diary

"A chronicle of America's past that is full of details they never told you back in fifth grade."―Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Informative, entertaining and scary...this book brings history to life and pours it a tall one."―High Times

Great disappointment
By E. Cartwright
This book was a great disappointment. I am glad it was free and I paid nothing for it. If a book claims to be some kind of history, I expect that the author has made some kind of effort to present history accurately. From the beginning, the author stated many historical inaccuracies. And in the latter part of the book, it became evident she was presenting as historical facts things that she THOUGHT might be true just to prove her points. It was also clear that she used people she just did not like as examples of drunks. She totally lost me when she blamed the Iraq war on Pres. Bush's drinking. I thought that war was a mistake but really? He had quit drinking long before that. What ever this book is, it is not history.

Eh.
By Amazon Customer
More of an anti-drinking commentary than a history of alcohol in the US. The author jumps all over on the timeline of history referencing future, past and current events in the same paragraph. Not what I was looking for.

Dissappointment
By Chewbdu
This book is ok, but less than I expected. While she does give some interesting anecdotes on people and events in history who were "influenced" by alcohol consumption, she goes off a lot on talking about alcoholism and it's effects on people and their families and treatment which is not why I bought the book. I was disappointed in it.

An innovation classic. From Steve Jobs to Jeff Bezos, Clay Christensen’s work continues to underpin today’s most innovative leaders and organizations.

A seminal work on disruption—for everyone confronting the growth paradox.

For readers of the bestselling The Innovator’s Dilemma—and beyond—this definitive work will help anyone trying to transform their business right now.

In The Innovator’s Solution, Clayton Christensen and Michael Raynor expand on the idea of disruption, explaining how companies can and should become disruptors themselves. This classic work shows just how timely and relevant these ideas continue to be in today’s hyper-accelerated business environment.

Christensen and Raynor give advice on the business decisions crucial to achieving truly disruptive growth and propose guidelines for developing your own disruptive growth engine. The authors identify the forces that cause managers to make bad decisions as they package and shape new ideas—and offer new frameworks to help create the right conditions, at the right time, for a disruption to succeed. This is a must-read for all senior managers and business leaders responsible for innovation and growth, as well as members of their teams.

Review
A Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and National Post Bestseller.

Praise for The Innovator’s Solution:

The Financial Times
“Fresh thinking aplenty . . . nothing less than a handbook for managers who would rather disrupt than be disrupted.”

Fast Company
“Every dilemma demands a solution. And this book lives up to its promise: More than an engrossing read, shot through with Christensen’s rigorous thinking and trademark clarity, it’s a valuable tool for every aspiring upstart—whether you’re inside a billion-dollar company or have a billion-dollar glimmer in your eye.”

The New York Times
“If [Christensen’s] first book left business with the quandary of how a middle-aged company can be as creative as the new kid on the block, [this] book is an instructive tutorial on how to rekindle the spark of youth and nurture the fragile flame.”

The Miami Herald
“The Innovator’s Solution is an intelligent, perceptive (and frequently counterintuitive) look at innovation, and well worth the time it takes to read and digest it to gain a greater understanding of the complex and profound combination of forces driving business development.”

The Conference Board Review
“. . . Required reading for every manager in America.”

The Toronto Globe and Mail
“A promising blueprint for innovation.”

Excellent book but not updated
By Michael Lercel
Very good insight on how to view the innovation process. However this is marketed as a new edition, but it certainly doesn't feel like it. Examples do not reflect changes in industry since the original was written.

So if you read the original edition, not worth investing in this update. But if you did not read the original then this is definitely worth reading. All of those reviews are still relevant.

Good information, but a little outdated

Good information, but a little outdated. This is the same as the 2003 edition of the book, just with a new cover.

Excellent input for growth management and margin optimalization
By Jørgen Tvedt
The book repeats most everything from the "Dilemma" book and, unless readers want some interesting historical examples, there is no need to read the first.

The most suitable prerequisites and circumstances for hatching successful disruptive businesses are explained in detail. These are suggested as the main route to predictable growth for existing and new companies.

The book is quite repetitive and I suspect it to somewhat oversimplify complex issues, also using a scientific language while offering theories that aren't really proven. However the ideas presented and the clearly structured content convincingly offer the reader insights into margin fluctuations in the value network and the logic of growth.

You quickly get used to the author calling him selves "we", like if the book was actually a scientific publication.

Highly recommended, also if you have already read the "Dilemma" book.

    good book, needs color
    By David R. Gustafson
This is a good book for Hotel operations and management, but I liked, "Check-in Check-out" better. This book is a soft cover and does not have any color photos. "Front Office" has some good content, but the book could be improved with added color.

Advance Praise: "The Inquisition in Hollywood is a classic text that refuses to be outdated: it tells the inside story of Hollywood radicals and their victimization, one of the least understood and least appreciated episodes in the history of American art. The scrupulous research, the lucid commentary and hard-hitting conclusions make The Inquisition in Hollywood a major contribution." -- Paul Buhle, coauthor of Tender Comrades: A BAckstory of the Hollywood Blacklist

    Indispensible
    By Douglas Doepke
I'm not a scholar of the period, but the book strongly recommends itself as the standard history of the blacklist era. Co-written in 1970, it's since undergone a number of reprintings, including a provocative Afterward to the 1983 issue, where the authors respond to critics. It's a voluminous work, 400+ pages, with small print, so it's definitely not a quick read, though the text flows easily. A number of appendices help keep the sometimes confusing cast of players properly sorted.

As a fact-stating document, the work looks pretty exhaustive. Beginning with the Depression era 1930's, the narrative follows the growth of the Hollywood Left through the war years, to the post-war inquisition and decline, and into the cultural thaw of the 1960's. Focus is mainly on developments within and without the Screen Writers Guild (SWG), the most left-wing of the industry unions, and from whose ranks many broader industry coalitions emerge. It's their battles with the producers over the final product that constitutes a key subplot, and lesser known phase of the Hollywood wars. The emphasis throughout remains on events rather than individuals, though a number of key figures do predominate-- Trumbo, Lawson, Biberman, et al. Nonetheless, what we learn of these and other pivotal players is strictly a tale of character and conviction rather than personality or peccadillo.

It's a sobering account with clear lessons for those raised on high-school civics classes. No one likes to think of democratic America as purging the unorthodox for "thought-crimes'. Yet, all things considered, it's hard to resist some such real life conclusion. The pressures through which the entertainment industry were finally brought to heel make for a fascinating and essential read. For me, it's surprising the extent to which some of the studios (e.g. MGM!) resisted the onslaughts at the same time others (e.g. Warner Bros.) capitulated almost immediately. Not surprisingly, the emotions of that treacherous period have never faded away. Even now, the blacklist remains highly charged, erupting again, for example, during a 1999 awards presentation for HUAC-collaborator Elia Kazan.

The book takes a generally sympathetic, but not uncritical, view of those blacklisted. Still, the various nuances, as recounted in the book, are simply too complex and various to try to summarize here. (The complexity is heightened by the many acronyms that pop up on almost every page-- a handy referencing guide would have helped.) On the other hand, the authors are categorical in their perspective on HUAC and its various incarnations. The committee is clearly viewed as a reactionary tool intent on exploiting anti-communist hysteria for basically anti-New Deal, anti-labor, and anti-Semitic aspirations. At the same time, the acumen of these forces is acknowledged. HUAC managed to pick off Hollywood's most vulnerable labor activists as part of a wider process that also sent the kind of chill through American liberalism that continues to frustrate labor organizing to present day. Proto-fascists or not, those guiding the committees knew what they were doing.

The book also dispells key misconceptions. One popular belief has it that the blacklist served only to punish communists. The fuller account, however, outlines the broader anti-labor, anti-civil rights agenda, spearheaded in part by HUAC and its minions, with the result that many anti-fascist liberals, "tainted" by Popular Front or New Deal associations, were also made to suffer by the changing political winds. In fact, the dragnet spread beyond known communists to include those unwilling to embrace the new Cold War orthodoxies. There's also a widespread tendency to identify the inquisition with the quixotic career of one man, Senator McCarthy, whose name has since become synonymous with the entire era. But as the text shows, the inquisition began much earlier with the 1930's Dies' committee, while the 1947 blacklist took place well before McCarthy's 1950 advent. In fact, the New Deal backlash was much deeper than the ambitions of any one person.

If there's a drawback, it's the occasional absence of specific national and international events that influenced the progress of the inquisition. Thus, little effort is made to link the purges to strains in the liberal-left alliance as impacted by the Wallace campaign of 1948 or the replacement of Party head Earl Browder in 1944. Similarly, little or no mention is made of the communist triumph in China or the war in Korea, both of which contributed greatly to the climate surrounding the 1951 hearings. Nonetheless, whatever the minor defects, the consequences of that reactionary period are still being felt, most notably through the disastrously reduced role of labor in national decision-making of which the Bush years now stand as a clear beneficiary. All in all, the Ceplair-Englund work remains essential for anyone searching for a handle on post-war America.

As Definitive a Book as We are Likely to Get about the Hollywood Blacklist
    By Richard M. Sola
A fair, thorough, well, researched, and well-written history of a highly controversial topic. Ceplair does an excellent job putting the Hollywood Blacklist into historical context and describing the global and national events in which the Blacklist was created.

This book is as close to definitive as we will probably get. The

Unlike so many other authors, Ceplair does not glorify the Hollywood Ten and others that were blacklisted and does not minimize the existence of the Communist Party in Hollywood.

How Music Works, by David Byrne

How Music Works is David Byrne’s remarkable and buoyant celebration of a subject he has spent a lifetime thinking about. In it he explores how profoundly music is shaped by its time and place, and he explains how the advent of recording technology in the twentieth century forever changed our relationship to playing, performing, and listening to music.

Acting as historian and anthropologist, raconteur and social scientist, he searches for patterns—and shows how those patterns have affected his own work over the years with Talking Heads and his many collaborators, from Brian Eno to Caetano Veloso. Byrne sees music as part of a larger, almost Darwinian pattern of adaptations and responses to its cultural and physical context. His range is panoptic, taking us from Wagnerian opera houses to African villages, from his earliest high school reel-to-reel recordings to his latest work in a home music studio (and all the big studios in between).

Touching on the joy, the physics, and even the business of making music, How Music Works is a brainy, irresistible adventure and an impassioned argument about music’s liberating, life-affirming power.

    Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2012: It's no surprise that David Byrne knows his music. As the creative force behind Talking Heads and many solo and collaborative ventures, he's been writing, playing, and recording music for decades. What is surprising is how well his voice translates to the page. In this wide-ranging, occasionally autobiographical analysis of the evolution and inner workings of the music industry, Byrne explores his own deep curiosity about the "patterns in how music is written, recorded, distributed, and received." He is an opinionated and well-educated tour guide, and the resulting essays--on topics from rockers' clothes to the role of the turntable, concert stages to recording studios--will give you an entirely new perspective on the complex journey a song takes from conception to your iPod. --Neal Thompson

    From Booklist
*Starred Review* Most people know idiosyncratic, Scottish-born David Byrne as the front man of that great new wave band, Talking Heads. But he is also an author, painter, photographer, and film and record producer. In this wide-ranging celebration of the power of music, he discusses, among many topics, the early days of the recording industry, various types of music venues, birdsong and whale calls, the significance of mixtapes, the development of CDs, his love of African rhythms, and the concept of creativity and what it means to be creative. But he also mentions his own career as well as the many collaborators he has worked with, including English musician and producer Brian Eno, Brazilian composer and singer Caetano Veloso, and DJ Fatboy Slim. He describes the origin of his twitchy stage persona and acknowledges his own shyness, describing himself as “a withdrawn introvert,” whose most comfortable way of communicating was, he says, onstage. (“Poor Susan Boyle; I can identify,” he writes). At one point, he even self-diagnoses himself as having a mild form of Asperger’s syndrome. He concludes by asking provocative questions: What is music good for? Why do we need music? “Funding future creativity is a worthy investment,” he insists. Endlessly fascinating, insightful, and intelligent. --June Sawyers

    From Bookforum
Byrne's book tells a version of the musical life that is deliberately less dramatic and heroic than first-person accounts by musicians usually are. That's because How Music Works isn't just a memoir... it meanders at some points, or lapses into a digest of Byrne's broad reading on various subjects. In a book that covers so much ground, often with a zoomed-in level of detailed focus, it's up to the reader to find the through lines that speak to his or her particular concerns. —Simon Reynolds

    Musical Musings: A Hodge-Podge
    By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
Byrne begins his wide-ranging historical, technological, psychological and sociological examination of music with a novel insight: architecture of musical venues shape composition and instrumental arrangements. Regarding huge gothic cathedrals, intimate nightclubs, and jungle camp sites, room reverberation, volume of space, and audience vocal ambience dictate modal versus scale works, instrument development, and performance dynamics. The great revolutionary divide was recording technology, and musicians discovered that what works live does not necesarily achieve the same result on vinyl, tape, CD, or .mp3, and vice versa. Expectations often lead to disappointment and the performance and performer suffers. With such an interesting introduction, the book offers much promise. It almost fulfills expectations with both personal and general tidbits and theses that reward the reader, though for myself his personal examples are somewhat weaker.

The second chapter is an musical autobiographical section describing the evolution of his music and stage attire over the succeeding eras of rock. In his world travels, his encounter with Japanese and Balinese traditional music and theatre art had a profound influence on the development of his stage craft. One of his suits clearly had classic Japanese origins.

Chapters 3 and 4 return to musicology with an expansion of the role of technology, recording and playback. The historical account is amusing when considering the delusions of reality instilled by each new device on the unconditioned and uneducated ear. The ideal of recordings was and remains an actual live performance, particularly among classical music fans; but the alternative worthy philosophy is the electronic creation of uniquely shaped sound itself, as with tape editing, synthesizers and digital programming, and electric instrument design. Oddly, computerized editing of recordings to achieve perfection in tempo, pitch, and so forth proved imperfect to the ear and lacking in warmth and positive emotional value. Byrne does not elaborate in later chapters, but recordings (and its transmission over radio) changed society by uniting peoples, speeding musical development, and (for instance, in Brazil) of overturning governmental policy of approved musical forms. I do not share Bryne's lament about the calculus-like wave sectioning of digital CDs over analogue LPs because of psychoacoutics, an aging ear, and the fact that speakers are yet analogue in their cone movement and shaping. Of interest is Byrne's belief that we are now so awash in music, indeed private music on personal .mp3 players and smart phones, that live performances are becoming more important, as that increasingly rare commodity, silence. I enjoyed Bryne's relating, in brief James Burke fashion, the connection of the Chinese mouth organ, the shen, to digital computers.

Chapter 5 is again more personal with Bryne's experiences in a recording studio and the art, engineering, and strategy of creating an album. Entire books have been written and documentary films have focused on this subject, but the use of computers on mixing boards is a new phenomenon.

The following chapter discusses his collaborations. He had already mentioned his albums with Brian Eno, but now Byrne moves beyond Talking Heads by developing music with Caetano Veloso and choreographer Twyla Tharp and creating with Norman Cook [Fatboy Slim] a theatrical piece on the Philippine's Imelda Marcos.

Chapter 7 is all about the business and financial side of the music industry. There are pie charts. He explains the very recent changes in industry, when musicians can edit and mix their music on their laptop computers and distribute it via digital download and cloud companies and promote themselves with YouTube videos and have kickstarter campaigns to get public underwriters. The giant brick & mortar record shops (Tower, Borders, Virgin Megastore) are no more and the power of music labels are severely diminished. This chapter should be read by anyone considering how to create and promote their own music; he describes various business models.

The next chapter furthers practical advice on the choice of venues, song material, the courage to be different, responsibility to band members and fellow musicians, and so on. It is a peculiar chapter for such a book.

Chapter 9 pulls back to a shotgun approach critical of musical elitism and lauding the amateur musician. In the days before mass-marketed recordings, there was a piano in the parlor. Even in the 1960s, every kid (yours truly included) had an acoustic guitar, singing folk songs. Until very recently, courses in music appreciation were dedicated only to classical music and rarely jazz. Governmental and corporate funding erected costly symphony halls and museums. Byrne seems to ignore the reality that these measures were to preserve and encourage endangered music styles and that the masses are doing fine in supporting pop and avant-garde culture, filling stadiums and arenas and small local music joints. Symphony halls are not restricted to dead European composers; I have heard contemporary American, Japanese, Argentinian, Iranian, and other world composers. Still, the point is taken when middle and high schools do not offer music and art classes and other nations support amateur musicians, music clubs, and youth bands and orchestras. Music and art should not be passive art forms.

The final chapter covers music as a human, biological, and indeed metaphysical essence. This historical and anthropological section sketches prehistorical, ancient, and early modern musical instruments, musical sciences, and philosophies. Everything vibrates, from atoms to planets. He does not include it, but string theory of matter involves vibrating strands of energy. Bryne briefly mentions the differing scales of music across the planet, the relationship of language and speech to music, neurological imprinting of music and its performance, music in religious rituals [Taliban and similar zealots aside], the natural ambient music appreciated by John Cage and the composed ambient music of Satie, Eno, and Feldman, and various other aspects of music. Bryne can only touch upon these large subjects as he closes the book. While it may lead to further reading, I find the section too scattered to be truly effective.

This grand book, with its padded cover, offers a little of everything to everyone. Fans of Bryne, as leader of the Talking Heads or as musicologist, will surely find much to appreciate here. I do think, however, that he could have prepared two smaller books, one dedicated to the practice of musicmaking today and one to music's historical and anthropological aspects.

Terrific book for music lovers and content creators alike
    By David Meerman Scott
This is David Byrne week for me. On Sunday, I caught the sensational David Byrne and St. Vincent show at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. The last time I saw Byrne live was when I caught the Talking Heads on August 19, 1983 at the old Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York City. So, clearly I was already a Byrne fan.

    How Music Works

The other part of David Byrne week is his fabulous new book How Music Works. The book is Byrne's take on the industry he's succeeded in. He offers keen observations about the music industry, the art of making music, telling stories in the book using a combination of history, anthropology, and music theory. I love this book!

In particular, Byrne has a fascinating take on the development of music, which is quite different from what other music historians say. In a chapter titled "Creation in Reverse" he argues that music evolves to fill the space where it is performed.

For example, the Talking Heads evolved in the 1970s at New York punk club CBGB requiring volume to overcome the din. The sparse music that came out of the CBGB scene such as the Ramones and Television worked perfectly for that room.

Music that evolved in gothic cathedrals (lots of reverberation) has long notes with no key changes. Carnegie Hall and other similar rooms require texture. With discos, people made music to exploit the fantastic sound systems and people's need to dance. Rock music played in hockey arenas (the worst acoustics on the planet) must be straightforward with medium tempos. You get the idea. The music that is successful works perfectly for each venue.

With personal sound systems (starting with the Walkman in the 1970s then evolving into MP3 players such as the iPod), all of a sudden you can hear every single detail. This allowed pop music to evolve from its early radio form.

Byrne has a 2010 TED Talk on this idea: "How architecture helped music evolve."

    How Content Works

As I devoured How Music Works I was constantly thinking how Byrne's ideas apply to other forms of content. I think the ideas are valid when thinking about the written word, video content, and the Web. I used the ideas in How Music Works to formulate ideas about content in general.

David Byrne's How Music Works is amazing. Read it. And as you do if you're not in the music business, feel free to substitute "content" for "music" and see where the ideas lead you.

{My thoughts} – Everyone is aware of the game that individual’s like to play called Marco Polo. One person says Marco and another says Polo. The individual that says Marco is suppose to find the individual that says Polo without being able to physically see them. This game is often played in bodies of water. Marco Polo the explorer is whom the game is named after.

Marco Polo was a born a merchant in Italy. He came from a family of merchants and it was ll he every knew and was taught. When he turned 17 he made a trip with his father and his Uncle to China. They spent a great number of years there working on a ruler named Kublai Khan. Khan was feared by those his armies had overthrown. However, he appeared to be a just and reasonable ruler based on the information recorded by Marco Polo on his travels with his family.

Marco Polo had kept vivid noted of everything he saw, he learned and he did while he was traveling. He had no real reason to keep all the notes, other then that he’d wanted to. It was a good thing that he did though because his notes and the things he learned became really useful for others that wanted to travel a similar journey.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading many more books in this series.

This series of books by Joan Holub are PERFECT! 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade and up! Pictures and larger print help so much when getting a young 9yr old to read about history. When they are a bit older, this is a great book for them to read alone and be captivated! The facts are spot on and it is so helpful when not going into WAY TOO MUCH detail about something you know your kid will never remember! It is just the right amount of story to make them reading it possible! Strongly recommend any of her books in this area. Thank you Joan! Now keep coming out with more!! :)
