Torn between two worlds

Terry Hollis was the son of a notorious outlaw named Black Jack. His father was murdered and Terry was raised from infancy by the women who loved his father. The question throughout the book was whether young Hollis would go straight or follow in his father's footsteps.
This story is not as fast-paced as the others, but an element of tenseness carries throughout the story. It is a well-written and enjoyable character study.

Enjoyable Yarn

I like Max Brand's stories over most other Western writers because he sidesteps page after page of monotonous action and substitutes the inner thoughts and emotions of his characters. As we get to know them we start to worry over their fate. If that is the kind of story you like, then, you are in luck here.

After having read ten or so of Max Brand's novels, I have true appreciation for his diverse work. However, I found "Black Jack" to be dull and monotonous. If a reader is looking for an entertaining read, "Black Jack" doesn't fit that need.

Good Book on Recipes but....

I found this book to have some excellent recipes within. However, if you are looking for a major primer on oils or extensive information, this is NOT the book for you. This book is designed to be for someone newer to essential oils who does not want to create their own recipes or someone who has "been around the block" but wants something simple to help them learn more and try different things with a reduced risk of error.

Other reviewers have complained about the choices of oils and the expense. I found her list to be fairly accurate but VERY different from her starter kit for the free online course she offers through Aromahead Institute.

My recommendations to other readers: (and potential readers!)

1: Read the ENTIRE BOOK and decide which formulas you wish to try. THEN purchase your oils accordingly. This will save the expense of oils you do not like, do not want to use, or do not plan on using. Start small and pick 2-3 recipes instead of the whole kit n' caboodle.

2: She recommends MANY times in the book to research your oils. This book is not intended to be for that research. Know that ahead of time and be ready to invest in a good book on essential oils and other herbal remedies. Until you are able to make that investment, there are many locations online, including Aromahead Institute and reputable online companies that sell essential oils, absolutes, and hydrasols which can help you.

3: This is NOT meant to be the end of your journey in essential oils. Be ready to keep studying and learning. This is the start of the path, not the final destination.

4: Last but not least, please learn proper safety protocols and USE them. For your safety and the safety of those you love.

Fun and essential book and now a new phone app 12/20/2013

This is an updated review to reflect the paperback and the new phone app for Aromahead Institute:

I was excited about reviewing the eBook `Essential Living - Aromatherapy recipes for Health & Home" when it first came out. Long before eBooks were even a gleam in the eye of the internet, I dreamed of having my huge book collection scanned onto my computer. I was ecstatic to have this great little e-book come along, so beautifully formatted, and I was able to carry it around on my laptop to view anytime and anywhere, and it was about aromatherapy. How cool was that?

However, last summer I obtained a paper copy of the book and decided to update my review and experience and to highlight the new phone app " Natural Remedies with Aromatherapy" also by Andrea Butje and owner of Aromahead Institute. I love it...but more about the app in a minute.

What I really chuckled about with the paper copy of the book Essential Living was the acknowledgement page, which read like a recipe. It was telling on so many different levels what the reader was about to journey into: an introduction to what aromatherapy is and recipes to follow, which can be the biggest hurdle for many people, neophytes and experienced alike.

It is an excellent start for beginners to the study of aromatherapy and those who have used aromatherapy for years may benefit as well. Essential Living is tidy, not over-stuffed, the information is succinct and trim. The essence is in the recipes offered for the many areas of life. It has tips and ideas for blending; organizing; best tools to have on hand; ideas for a starter kit, something many people often ask about; and there is a master list of the oils used in the book, along with their therapeutic properties, which serves as a quick reference to make your blending experience pop.

Essential Living is exactly what it says, essential information to get you started on the road to discovery, an exploration where you get to try a host of recipes for various situations. Andrea takes you through an introduction to aromatherapy, wetting your curiosity about the science of aromatherapy and the therapeutic value of using essential oils and how they are so important for healing.

All aspects of learning about aromatherapy are over-viewed with encouragement to go deeper into the study of this wonderful healing art. This is a very unique reference of recipes with just the guts to pique your interest and make you lust for more. It cuts to the chase and the recipes are spot on.

I have been in this field since 2001 and I use it as a teaching in some of my introductory classes, I give it as gifts to family, friends and clients and I refer it to those who want to have a book of solid recipes they can trust and turn to for relief. I also peek inside when I feel stuck or to rushed and need a blend in the moment.. it is recipecentric and that makes it easy to navigate. There are 12 areas that cover just about anything we need:
Introduction
Essential Oil tool kit
Basic aromatherapy applications
The kitchen
Bathroom
Beauty and skin
Medicine chest
The living room
The bedroom
Caring for kids
The office
Patio and outdoor
Travel
Emotional well being
and resources

It is easy to read and you "get it" as you browse through the blending techniques, making butters, where to use the oils, room by room, or what to create for body care, educating about best ways to create safe usable, non - chemical products for natural care and for the medicine chest.

I love the section "Caring for Kids". When it comes to using essential oils for children there are more cautions we have to be aware of and the recipes in this chapter are expressly with that in mind, offering safe and practical applications for our "little ones".

This little book is packed with logical, organized and fun recipes. I have tried many and my students and friends who have this book often tell me they are so happy I gave them this gift of joy. It feels like a classic one to have on hand. To be honest, as much as I love e-books, there is a comfort to flip through the pages of a book and stop here or there...

...And that brings me back to the phone app `Aromahead Institutes' Natural Remedies with Aromatherapy'. What a great app. I downloaded it about a week ago and I think it is so useful. It covers 6 categories with over 70 recipes at your fingertips. You can view recipes for each category or you can view all the recipes at once. If you travel a lot and suddenly find yourself in need of a recipe you don't have to go far. Click on your app and there is bound to be something you can use...

The Essential Living book and the Natural Remedies with Aromatherapy are both great, check them out and see for yourself.

What a delightful eBook!
Reading it was a fun experience filled with tips, a helpful starter kit of essential oils to have on hand and a source book of ideas for every area of the house and body. It was easy to read and had lovely recipes for a range of conditions and situations. The recipes were uncomplicated and all were relevant. I loved the "Caring for Kids" blends and through out the book were cautions and ideas about the oils and ways to use them. The Appendix includes a master list of the essential oils used with their common therapeutic uses.
It is an amazing, simply elegant gem for the novice and for the more informed as a reminder of how wonderful the world of aromatherapy can transform our lives in a pleasant and healing way.

Important, Beautiful Book

I am so excited to be able to give this book to people I know and love!

Between its exquisitely beautiful covers, Andrea Butje, one of the world's experts on the uses of essential oils, has given all of us access to simple ways to change our lives for the better. Aromatherapy is so much more than just about creating ambiance. It is a way to heal ourselves and our homes. I love the very doable recipes in this book for every room in the house. I have always wanted to steer clear of the toxic chemicals in cleaning products, but didn't know how. Andrea offers wonderful alternatives for both scrubs and sprays that really work and are a pleasure to use.

The body care products--moisturizer, perfume balms, and even deodorant--feel great, without the sticky, overly-scented qualities of commercial products. There is also nothing like Andrea's natural hand sanitizer! It feels and smells so great!

As a learning coach, I work with students on a regular basis in my home office. They love it when I diffuse the "Calm and Focus" diffuser blend while they're working. Together, we recently made "mental clarity" inhalers, using a total of 10-15 drops of the same oils, to help my students stay alert while taking a standardized test. Both the kids and the parents were very excited by this new "learning tool."

When I travel, I always have the "Crowded Spaces Immunity Inhaler" for the plane and the "Hotel Linen Spray" for my home away from home. I feel like I'm taking care of myself, even in places I share with so many others.

This beautiful book offers simple, elegant ideas for ways to support ourselves naturally. I love to think of our planet getting healthier one home and family at a time. Thank you, Andrea, for showing us how.

Should have been entitled "Glimpses of Death."

Disappointing. I'm still reading it because I can't say it's all bad, but (and it's a big but) after a third of the book done I've read enough to know what the pattern of the writing is. I would have liked this book more if it had been advertised more accurately. The summary made it seem like I would be reading a book that focused in and elaborated on the active death experiences of people transitioning to the other side, particularly with focused exposition about what they were seeing, hearing (etc) that would give the reader pause to consider the reality of a possible afterlife. Instead, I got a book filled with very generalized experiences about the dying person's surroundings, family, friends and religiosity (and pretty much only Christian at that) with sometimes very vague glimpses into a possible afterlife that was only brushed over briefly. The inside summary flap of the book should have read, "A Christian nurse's account of her dying patients, and how they made peace with their impending deaths while finding or reconfirming their belief in God."

First, bless the hearts of all hospice workers who are as selfless and generous with their time, faith and love as Ms. Harris. One story in particular, the one with a picture on a wall that actually wasn't, sticks in my mind. Dying freaks me out so any story with someone finding out they were on their way out through something like a routine physical scares me silly. I don't know what I was expecting or hoping to get out of this book and I am equally unsure how I feel about it after having read it. It was sad, but this is something we all will face sometime. I do want to read more from this author, so I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it, but I still question heaven. I wish my faith was as strong as the author's.

Food for Thought

I actually loved this book but I'm not sure that everyone would do the same. The book is not so much focused on a very clinical death and dying process as it is on a Christian focus on death and dying. I found the stories very comforting and was amazed that God goes to so much trouble, and is so caring and concerned for His children.

All the deaths were peaceful in this book and being a nurse myself, I'm can;t say that all are so from what I have seen with my own eyes. I do think the book provides a very warm accounting of what hospice nurses can do for families and the patient's that are dying; but again, the focus is not on the process of what tasks hospice nurses do but on the emotional and spiritual journey of all the people involved, including patient, family, and hospice nurse. I for one believe the miraculous things that Trudy Harris tells in her book as I have seen some of these same things in my own practice. I do not believe that the things that happen are a result of oxygen deprivation or dying brain cells because some of these events happen many days before the body is actually actively dying. Overall, I liked this book so well, that I purchased the second one in the series.

Francois Jullien is Professor at the Universite Paris VII-Denis Diderot and director at the Institut de la Pensee Contemporaine. He is the author of "Detour and Access: Strategies of Meaning in China and Greece, The Propensity of Things: Toward a History of Efficacy in China, " and "In Praise of Blandness: Proceeding from Chinese Thought and Aesthetics" all published by Zone Books.

You tend to either love or hate Jullien's work

You tend to either love or hate Jullien's studies of classical Chinese culture (mainly related to early Daoism and the associated arts).

First, they are translations from French, and each book tends to have a different translator, which can have an uneven effect if you read several of his works in a row. And some translated words can be seriously misleading. For instance, Jullien's French original l'esprit is often translated into English 'spirit', when it can also be 'mind', giving an English reader a quite different meaning sometimes to what Jullien intends.

Among the good things about his books are that he is clearly learned in the subject, and has some deep insights and interesting glosses. He often suggests profoundly different ways of seeing things.

The not-so-good (for me) is that he can be pompous with that French intellectual stodge.

When I can put aside his pomposity and verbosity, and just focus on the interesting and penetrating ideas, then I love his books. When I can't, then I don't.

Silent Transformations is probably his least verbose book, where the philosophy, though deep, is treated with a light touch. As a result, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was educated by reading it.

If you have not read any Jullien before, this is a good book to start on, since his original ideas leap out, without being embedded in too much of the French intellectualism that many English-speaking readers can find so tedious.

Francois Jullien is an enlightening and exhilarating experience. This is a good starting point--simply put, he is brilliant!

Heavy book, not bedtime reading. Great for the office! I loved the study on transformation or chrysalis.... A fast read if you can stay focused for a few hrs.
