Ultimate Star Wars

One of the authors, Ryder Windham, has worked on many great Star Wars books previously and does a great job compiling detailed information about the movies and their components. In his introduction, he begins with an interesting point: think of Ewoks, or Lobot, or the Slave I. These are never mentioned by name in the films, yet most casual fans are aware of them and know their names. That means they somehow absorbed that information from another source - perhaps the internet, a video game, a novel, an animated series, or maybe even an encyclopedia like this.

The book is organized by topics - the first half of the book is Characters and Creatures, and then the second half of the book covers things like Locations, Technology, and Vehicles. Appearing at various points throughout the encyclopedia are "Key Events" (the Duel on Mustafar, Training on Dagobah, etc.)

The book is full of detail... each major character gets a biography, important events which they were involved, and sometimes other tidbits of info such as their wardrobe, their weapons, etc. Important characters like Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi get a full 2-page spread, while smaller characters like Poggle the Lesser or Jek Porkins only get a fraction of a page. But its the inclusion of these small characters and creatures (who may only be on screen for a few seconds) that make the encyclopedia useful and comprehensive.

Each section also includes a "timeline" and a "behind the scenes". So for example, the section on vehicles will have a Vehicle Timeline that covers the major events in the saga involving ships and transports - the Boonta Eve podrace, the Battle of Yavin (which destroyed the Death Star), etc. Then there will be a behind the scenes page that shows an AT-AT miniature, an early TIE fighter and X-Wing concept sketch, etc.

For those wondering what canon is used for the encyclopedia, it seems to be the six Star Wars films as well as the Clone Wars and Rebels TV series. In looking through the book, I could not find any included subjects that were strictly EU and did not appear in the films/animated series.

I should also mention that the book includes a nice foreword by Anthony Daniels, who briefly discusses the complexity of the saga and admits that despite his involvement in the saga over 30 years even he doesn't know all the facts.

Overall, this is a highly-recommended product. The casual Star Wars fan will likely learn a lot; and even the most die-hard fans should learn something obscure that they did not know before.

This isn't a novel, it's a "pretend Star Wars is real and then draw a bunch of diagrams that show how everything 'works'" kind of fake-encylopedia.

That said, it's nearly perfect in this role. My kids and I have read and re-read many of these entries.

Popping it open is like jumping into the Wikipedia of a galaxy far, far away. Whatever page you hit is likely to look great, contains something very interesting, and reference a half-dozen other cool stuff elsewhere in the book.

It's a great resource for anyone into Star Wars fandom, RPG's, comics, or similarly lore-thick approach to Star Wars. It likely has no practical, real world application, but is a great world-bible and springboard for SW-flavored imaginations.

Excellent guide book

Excellent guide book! The sheer volume of Star Wars guide books out there is pretty daunting, so I was hesitant about which one to pick up, but I'm glad I ended up choosing this one. It covers the first 6 movies, the Clone Wars cartoon (the CG one), and Rebels. It goes into great detail about characters, creatures, weapons and tech, planets, vehicles and more! It seems like several guidebooks all rolled into one. Very happy with it.

A Canadian former "teacher-librarian" focuses on how media specialists can convince their constituents of the importance of school libraries to student learning and how they can influence the future of these libraries. She discusses how they will transform themselves as technology drastically changes how information is stored, accessed, and used by students and teachers. Action research involves a deliberate and focused plan in which an individual (or group) gathers and studies existing documentation and comes up with goals and a plan for study. In sequential chapters, the "tools and techniques" of the process are explained, with much emphasis on the author's own experiences. It is the personal viewpoint that makes this otherwise dry and theory-based manual so readable. "Tips" provides supplemental ideas and suggestions that will guide readers through their own research and evaluation. The manual is accompanied by a logical, easy-to-understand PowerPoint presentation on an enclosed CD-ROM that will come in handy in a variety of situations. Some of the graphics, however, are dated and detract from an otherwise excellent package. It could be used by media specialists as a motivational tool and to promote the importance of adapting school libraries to better fit the needs of today's teachers and students.

Tripp Corbin, GISP is the CEO and a cofounder of eGIS Associates, Inc. He has over 20 years of surveying, mapping, and GIS-related experience. He is recognized as an industry expert with a variety of geospatial software packages, including Esri, Autodesk, and Trimble products. He holds multiple certifications, including Microsoft Certified Professional, Certified Floodplain Manager, Certified GIS Professional, CompTIA Certified Technical Trainer, Esri Certified Enterprise System Design Associate, and Esri Certified Desktop Professional. During the course of his career, Tripp has assisted many private and public organizations to implement and maintain GIS solutions. Private companies, including engineering, surveying, planning, and forestry, often seek Tripp's experience to help them in various projects. Great book to start learning ArcGIS Pro

I was a technical reviewer for this book, and enjoyed reading and reviewing it.

It's presented in a workbook type format with step-by-step instructions and explanations throughout the chapters. It familiarizes the reader with the new modern ribbon interface, and goes through the different tools (analysis, automation, etc) and capabilities (projects, tasks, etc) of the software. This will benefit users who are new to the platform, and want to learn how to get started.

Tripp does an excellent job showing what ArcGIS Pro is capable of and how to get started creating your own projects.

Excellent quality with quality material coverage, practical, concise, and organized. The book was easy to follow along and the common tasks covered are most likely the highest used features. The book is worth it if your looking to get started with ArcGIS, even after going over the book you'll find yourself going back over it if you're anything like me. Highly recommend this book.

Torn between two worlds

Terry Hollis was the son of a notorious outlaw named Black Jack. His father was murdered and Terry was raised from infancy by the women who loved his father. The question throughout the book was whether young Hollis would go straight or follow in his father's footsteps.
This story is not as fast-paced as the others, but an element of tenseness carries throughout the story. It is a well-written and enjoyable character study.

Enjoyable Yarn

I like Max Brand's stories over most other Western writers because he sidesteps page after page of monotonous action and substitutes the inner thoughts and emotions of his characters. As we get to know them we start to worry over their fate. If that is the kind of story you like, then, you are in luck here.

After having read ten or so of Max Brand's novels, I have true appreciation for his diverse work. However, I found "Black Jack" to be dull and monotonous. If a reader is looking for an entertaining read, "Black Jack" doesn't fit that need.

Good Book on Recipes but....

I found this book to have some excellent recipes within. However, if you are looking for a major primer on oils or extensive information, this is NOT the book for you. This book is designed to be for someone newer to essential oils who does not want to create their own recipes or someone who has "been around the block" but wants something simple to help them learn more and try different things with a reduced risk of error.

Other reviewers have complained about the choices of oils and the expense. I found her list to be fairly accurate but VERY different from her starter kit for the free online course she offers through Aromahead Institute.

My recommendations to other readers: (and potential readers!)

1: Read the ENTIRE BOOK and decide which formulas you wish to try. THEN purchase your oils accordingly. This will save the expense of oils you do not like, do not want to use, or do not plan on using. Start small and pick 2-3 recipes instead of the whole kit n' caboodle.

2: She recommends MANY times in the book to research your oils. This book is not intended to be for that research. Know that ahead of time and be ready to invest in a good book on essential oils and other herbal remedies. Until you are able to make that investment, there are many locations online, including Aromahead Institute and reputable online companies that sell essential oils, absolutes, and hydrasols which can help you.

3: This is NOT meant to be the end of your journey in essential oils. Be ready to keep studying and learning. This is the start of the path, not the final destination.

4: Last but not least, please learn proper safety protocols and USE them. For your safety and the safety of those you love.

Fun and essential book and now a new phone app 12/20/2013

This is an updated review to reflect the paperback and the new phone app for Aromahead Institute:

I was excited about reviewing the eBook `Essential Living - Aromatherapy recipes for Health & Home" when it first came out. Long before eBooks were even a gleam in the eye of the internet, I dreamed of having my huge book collection scanned onto my computer. I was ecstatic to have this great little e-book come along, so beautifully formatted, and I was able to carry it around on my laptop to view anytime and anywhere, and it was about aromatherapy. How cool was that?

However, last summer I obtained a paper copy of the book and decided to update my review and experience and to highlight the new phone app " Natural Remedies with Aromatherapy" also by Andrea Butje and owner of Aromahead Institute. I love it...but more about the app in a minute.

What I really chuckled about with the paper copy of the book Essential Living was the acknowledgement page, which read like a recipe. It was telling on so many different levels what the reader was about to journey into: an introduction to what aromatherapy is and recipes to follow, which can be the biggest hurdle for many people, neophytes and experienced alike.

It is an excellent start for beginners to the study of aromatherapy and those who have used aromatherapy for years may benefit as well. Essential Living is tidy, not over-stuffed, the information is succinct and trim. The essence is in the recipes offered for the many areas of life. It has tips and ideas for blending; organizing; best tools to have on hand; ideas for a starter kit, something many people often ask about; and there is a master list of the oils used in the book, along with their therapeutic properties, which serves as a quick reference to make your blending experience pop.

Essential Living is exactly what it says, essential information to get you started on the road to discovery, an exploration where you get to try a host of recipes for various situations. Andrea takes you through an introduction to aromatherapy, wetting your curiosity about the science of aromatherapy and the therapeutic value of using essential oils and how they are so important for healing.

All aspects of learning about aromatherapy are over-viewed with encouragement to go deeper into the study of this wonderful healing art. This is a very unique reference of recipes with just the guts to pique your interest and make you lust for more. It cuts to the chase and the recipes are spot on.

I have been in this field since 2001 and I use it as a teaching in some of my introductory classes, I give it as gifts to family, friends and clients and I refer it to those who want to have a book of solid recipes they can trust and turn to for relief. I also peek inside when I feel stuck or to rushed and need a blend in the moment.. it is recipecentric and that makes it easy to navigate. There are 12 areas that cover just about anything we need:

Basic aromatherapy applications
The kitchen
Bathroom
Beauty and skin
Medicine chest

The bedroom
Caring for kids

It is easy to read and you "get it" as you browse through the blending techniques, making butters, where to use the oils, room by room, or what to create for body care, educating about best ways to create safe usable, non - chemical products for natural care and for the medicine chest.

I love the section "Caring for Kids". When it comes to using essential oils for children there are more cautions we have to be aware of and the recipes in this chapter are expressly with that in mind, offering safe and practical applications for our "little ones".

This little book is packed with logical, organized and fun recipes. I have tried many and my students and friends who have this book often tell me they are so happy I gave them this gift of joy. It feels like a classic one to have on hand. To be honest, as much as I love e-books, there is a comfort to flip through the pages of a book and stop here or there...

...And that brings me back to the phone app `Aromahead Institutes' Natural Remedies with Aromatherapy'. What a great app. I downloaded it about a week ago and I think it is so useful. What a delightful eBook!
Reading it was a fun experience filled with tips, a helpful starter kit of essential oils to have on hand and a source book of ideas for every area of the house and body. It was easy to read and had lovely recipes for a range of conditions and situations. The recipes were uncomplicated and all were relevant. I loved the "Caring for Kids" blends and through out the book were cautions and ideas about the oils and ways to use them. The Appendix includes a master list of the essential oils used with their common therapeutic uses.
It is an amazing, simply elegant gem for the novice and for the more informed as a reminder of how wonderful the world of aromatherapy can transform our lives in a pleasant and healing way.

Important, Beautiful Book

I am so excited to be able to give this book to people I know and love!

Between its exquisitely beautiful covers, Andrea Butje, one of the world's experts on the uses of essential oils, has given all of us access to simple ways to change our lives for the better. Aromatherapy is so much more than just about creating ambiance. It is a way to heal ourselves and our homes. I love the very doable recipes in this book for every room in the house. I have always wanted to steer clear of the toxic chemicals in cleaning products, but didn't know how. Andrea offers wonderful alternatives for both scrubs and sprays that really work and are a pleasure to use.

The body care products--moisturizer, perfume balms, and even deodorant--feel great, without the sticky, overly-scented qualities of commercial products. There is also nothing like Andrea's natural hand sanitizer! It feels and smells so great!

As a learning coach, I work with students on a regular basis in my home office. They love it when I diffuse the "Calm and Focus" diffuser blend while they're working. Together, we recently made "mental clarity" inhalers, using a total of 10-15 drops of the same oils, to help my students stay alert while taking a standardized test. Both the kids and the parents were very excited by this new "learning tool."

When I travel, I always have the "Crowded Spaces Immunity Inhaler" for the plane and the "Hotel Linen Spray" for my home away from home. I feel like I'm taking care of myself, even in places I share with so many others.

This beautiful book offers simple, elegant ideas for ways to support ourselves naturally. I love to think of our planet getting healthier one home and family at a time. Thank you, Andrea, for showing us how.
