Financial Asset Pricing Theory, by Claus Munk

Financial Asset Pricing Theory offers a comprehensive overview of the classic and the current research in theoretical asset pricing. Asset pricing is developed around the concept of a state-price deflator which relates the price of any asset to its future (risky) dividends and thus incorporates how to adjust for both time and risk in asset valuation. The willingness of any utility-maximizing investor to shift consumption over time defines a state-price deflator which provides a link between optimal consumption and asset prices that leads to the Consumption-based Capital Asset Pricing Model (CCAPM). A simple version of the CCAPM cannot explain various stylized asset pricing facts, but these asset pricing 'puzzles' can be resolved by a number of recent extensions involving habit formation, recursive utility, multiple consumption goods, and long-run consumption risks. Other valuation techniques and modelling approaches (such as factor models, term structure models, risk-neutral valuation, and option pricing models) are explained and related to state-price deflators.

The book will serve as a textbook for an advanced course in theoretical financial economics in a PhD or a quantitative Master of Science program. It will also be a useful reference book for researchers and finance professionals. The presentation in the book balances formal mathematical modelling and economic intuition and understanding. Both discrete-time and continuous-time models are covered. The necessary concepts and techniques concerning stochastic processes are carefully explained in a separate chapter so that only limited previous exposure to dynamic finance models is required.

Review
"This monograph provides a consistent and comprehensive presentation of the classical asset pricing paradigm, from the basics of the theory to the latest developments in the field. The reader's task is simplified by the consistent notation and the integrated conceptual framework that is employed; his technical facility improved by the extensive proofs of the main results that are offered; and his curiosity piqued by the extensive references to the empirical literature. The expert will find it a convenient reference and the student will find it an invaluable guide." --Michael J. Brennan, Professor of Finance at Anderson School, University of California Los Angeles, at Manchester Business School, and at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah

"Munk takes a completely fresh and well organized approach to communicating the key concepts and techniques of modern asset pricing theory. His treatment is clear, accessible, rigorously unified around the notion of state pricing, and encompasses the latest model specifications. He has set the new standard for doctoral-level courses on this subject." --Darrell Duffie, Dean Witter Distinguished Professor of Finance, at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University

"Financial Asset Pricing Theory is a rigorous, yet eminently accessible, textbook at the frontier of modern asset pricing theory with applications in portfolio management, the term structure of interest rates, and derivatives, and a nice selection of problem sets. Claus Munk's textbook is my top choice as a comprehensive and intuitive textbook for an introductory or advanced PhD course on asset pricing theory." --George M. Constantinides, Leo Melamed Professor of Finance, The University of Chicago, Booth School of Business

This is the most useful asset pricing theory book I own
By Jeremy
This is the most useful asset pricing theory book I own. I've got Duffie, Cochrane, and Pennacchi (as well as some other more empirically oriented books) and I've spent some time with Back's book, but this one so far is my favorite. The notation is very precise and the text is written so that's it's complete and easy to follow. Also, Munk takes a different approach in his exposition of continuous and discrete time. Most books devote the first half of the book to static and discrete time and the last half in continuous time. Munk, instead, tries a different approach. The book is divided up into economic topics and each chapter gives the static, discrete, and then continous-time treatment. I like this approach because it makes it easier to compare the discrete with the continuous time. It also makes sense to divide the book up by economic topic rather than mathematical approach. Also, this book is a theory book, but it does spend some time here and there describing important empirical facts and results.

The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey (Princeton Science Library), by Spencer Wells

Around 200,000 years ago, a man--identical to us in all important respects--lived in Africa. Every person alive today is descended from him. How did this real-life Adam wind up father of us all? What happened to the descendants of other men who lived at the same time? And why, if modern humans share a single prehistoric ancestor, do we come in so many sizes, shapes, and races?

Showing how the secrets about our ancestors are hidden in our genetic code, Spencer Wells reveals how developments in the cutting-edge science of population genetics have made it possible to create a family tree for the whole of humanity. We now know not only where our ancestors lived but who they fought, loved, and influenced.

Informed by this new science, The Journey of Man is replete with astonishing information. Wells tells us that we can trace our origins back to a single Adam and Eve, but that Eve came first by some 80,000 years. We hear how the male Y-chromosome has been used to trace the spread of humanity from Africa into Eurasia, why differing racial types emerged when mountain ranges split population groups, and that the San Bushmen of the Kalahari have some of the oldest genetic markers in the world. We learn, finally with absolute certainty, that Neanderthals are not our ancestors and that the entire genetic diversity of Native Americans can be accounted for by just ten individuals.

It is an enthralling, epic tour through the history and development of early humankind--as well as an accessible look at the analysis of human genetics that is giving us definitive answers to questions we have asked for centuries, questions now more compelling than ever.

Amazon.com Review
Spencer Wells traces human evolution back to our very first ancestor in The Journey of Man. Along the way, he sums up the explosive effect of new techniques in genetics on the field of evolutionary biology and all available evidence from the fossil record. Wells's seemingly sexist title is purposeful: he argues that the Y chromosome gives us a unique opportunity to follow our migratory heritage back to a sort of Adam, just as earlier work in mitochondrial DNA allowed the identification of Eve, mother of all Homo sapiens. While his descriptions of the advances made by such luminary scientists as Richard Lewontin and Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza can be dry, Wells comes through with sparkling metaphors when it counts, as when he compares genetic drift to a bouillabaisse recipe handed down through a village's generations. Though finding our primal male is an exciting prospect, the real revolution Wells describes is racial. Or rather, nonracial, as he reiterates the scientific truth that our notions of what makes us different from each other are purely cultural, not based in biology. The case for an "out of Africa" scenario of human migration is solid in this book, though Wells makes it clear when he is hypothesizing anything controversial. Readers interested in a fairly technical, but not overwhelming, summary of the remarkable conclusions of 21st-century human evolutionary biology will find The Journey of Man a perfect primer. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
In this surprisingly accessible book, British geneticist Wells sets out to answer long-standing anthropological questions of where humans came from, how we migrated and when we arrived in such places as Europe and North America. To trace the migration of human beings from our earliest homes in Africa to the farthest reaches of the globe, Wells calls on recent DNA research for support. Clues in the blood of present groups such as eastern Russia's Chukchi, as well as the biological remnants of long-extinct human clans, allow Wells to follow the Y chromosome as a relatively unaltered marker of human heritage. Eventually, working backward through time, he finds that the earliest common "ingredient" in males' genetic soup was found in a man Wells calls the "Eurasian Adam," who lived in Africa between 31,000 and 79,000 years ago. Each subsequent population, isolated from its fellows, gained new genetic markers, creating a map in time and space. Wells writes that the first modern humans "left Africa only 2,000 generations ago" and quickly fanned out across Asia, into Europe, and across the then-extant land bridge into the Americas. Using the same markers, he debunks the notion that Neanderthals were our ancestors, finds odd links between faraway peoples, and-most startlingly-discovers that all Native Americans can be traced to a group of perhaps a dozen people. By explaining his terminology and methods throughout the book, instead of in a chunk, Wells makes following the branches of the human tree seem easy. 44 color photos, 54 halftones and 3 maps.

Review
"The Journey of Man is a book that should be read, for undeniably the story Wells reveals will transform our understanding of ourselves."--Tim Flannery, New York Review of Books

"Spencer Wells chronicles the history of genetic population studies, starting with Darwin's puzzlement over the diversity of humanity he saw first-hand from the deck of the Beagle, and ending with the various attempts to classify human variation on the basis of different political and social agendas."--Rebecca Cann, Nature

"The Journey of Man is fascinating and oozes charm. . . . [It] is packed with important insights into our history and our relationships with each other. . . . Who needs literature when science is this much fun?"--Chris Lavers, Guardian

"The Journey of Man is the best account available of the story of human origins and dispersals."--Colin Renfrew, Times Higher Education Supplement

"Fortunately for the lay reader, Wells has a knack for clear descriptions and clever analogies to help explain the intricacies of the science involved. Both entertaining and enlightening."--Library Journal

"Wells does an excellent job of making complex scientific data accessible and weaves a tapestry of physical anthropology and archaeology as well as linguistics and, of course, genetics to piece together the rise of the agricultural society, the interrelations between far-flung languages, and the eventual settlement of humans into virtually every corner of the globe."--Elise Proulx, East Bay Express

Great history of modern humans
By William Divale, Ph.D.
Great book and very well written. I am a professional cultural anthropologist who just retired after 42 years of teaching. I had not paid much attention to the new work on genetics done in physical anthropology. This new research changes our picture of modern human origins completely. Spencer Wells does a great job of bringing the findings of several disciplines together to make a very strong argument. We all come from Africa - that is well known - but all modern humans stem from the same African woman who lived 150,000 years ago. Our spread through-out the planet out of Africa began only 60,000 years ago. He shows that by following the coastal route out of Africa our human ancestors could move rapidly across the planet. The old view is that we evolved from Homo Erectus and then Neanderthal man, but it appears that we just wiped them out, although there was some interbreeding. If you find this review hard to believe, then read the book.

A Wonderful Clarification for Those Who Really Want to Know The Basics of Human Proliferation Throughut Planet Earth !
By Bernard Z. Friedlander
This book is excellent in its field, and it would have gained its fifth star if the scientific foundations of genetics and genetic variability had been explained with a few more concessions to educated general readers who need help with the technical intricacies of genetic variation.
Except for that minor warning, Spencer Wells has done a very great service to those of us who seek a clearer understanding of the details of how our species came to occupy all of Earth, after our very high-risk emergence from Eastern Africa about 60,000 years ago.
The importance Wells attributes to Darwinian thinking about the application to homo sapiens of variability and selection to our emergence and proliferation is profound. Two key points stand out with great clarity: the very small populations of homo sapiens that survived the hazards that their varied groups encountered, before the development of agriculture, and the very high mortality that prevailed among those groups which faced the hazards of their journeys.
It seems ironic now, when our human expansion and "conquest" of Earth raises serious doubts about our species' capacity to continue to survive, that there was so long a period when it seems remarkable that homo sapiens survived at all.
Bernard Z. Friedlander, PhD, Madison, WI

Pretty good story of Humanity
By mark seligman
This book is an interesting but not gripping recounting of the biology and ancestry of human beings as traced primarily through the Y chromosone that identifies paternal lineage. It is probably worth 3.5 stars, but I think that the rating system tends to overexpress the views of people who love a book and the people who hate it resulting in few mid range reviews.
The technical aspects of DNA analysis are presented in an easily understandable manner. One does not need a PhD in biology to get this book.
The story is told straigthforwardly maybe too straightforward; for instance a friend had his DNA run to discover a significant contribution of African genes mixed in with his Irish ones. It turns out that during the 8th century the Vikings actually brought Africans to Ireland. This book seems to gloss over some of these events in order to keep the story clearer. I suspect that some controversies in the field are muted a bit; every scientific field has controversies.
The story of Kennebec man seems a little out of date, and that did make me wonder if there were other things that might need some updates.

Back to the hootenanny
By Jiminy
Around 1962 when I was first playing guitar, I had this book. Somehow I misplaced it. For 20 years I've been keeping my eyes open, and here it is! If you are a beginning strummer, or wish to get a glimpse of America in the early half of the 20th century, this book is awesome. Ten chords will get you thru the whole book, and you'll have a hoot doing it. If you are trying to teach your youngster to play guitar (or uke), this provides a ton of well known songs on which to practice, and then sing and play like they didn't know they could. I wish I'd had it in the window of opportunity for my grandkids.

Great Compact Songbook
By John Thurston
This songbook of Pete Seeger songs is great. It comes complete with guitar chords, stories and illustrations of each song. The size is compact, smaller than standard songbooks so naturally the print is smaller too. If the size is not an issue and you like a good selection of Pete Seeger songs, you'll be pleased. The book fits nicely in my guitar case. The guitar chords include diagrams though most of the chords are basic and easy.

From Booklist
You’ve gotta give it to comics-creator Klein. He’s entirely undaunted by the dreariest subject matter. In two volumes of The Cartoon Introduction to Economics, he (and economist Yoram Bauman) made the dismal science sorta festive. Now, with the help of statistician Dabney, he makes statistics pretty painless, too—for instance, by relegating mathematical explanations and details to the all-too-appropriately named appendix, The Math Cave! (every time math is mentioned in the main text, someone runs away, screaming). Amusing exemplary setups—trying to ascertain the number of fish in a lake or the average length of the worms used to catch them—afford wisecracking opportunities, while the book’s first half outlines random sampling, generating descriptions of the data in the sample, and checking for mistakes. Using such tools as the central limit theorem, inference via probability calculations, and testing hypotheses to get to confidently drawn conclusions is the meat of the second half (the wisecracks continue, fortunately). Stressing that what statistics aims for is probability, not certainty, this is a nifty reference and refresher. --Ray Olson

Review

“Like a superhero coming to save the day, in flies The Cartoon Introduction to Statistics . . . Its biggest contribution is to tackle the difficulties that arise from collecting data ‘in the wild'--in the real world and not in the laboratory. This makes the book more useful than those that just stick to the concepts . . . If statistics can ever be made fun, then this book shows how.” ―The Economist

“A statistician and an artist team up to demystify data crunching for the masses. Through comical tales of dragon racing, worm collecting and soda guzzling, Klein and Dabney illustrate how statisticians gather data and make predictions . . . Entertaining yet thorough.” ―Scientific American

“[A] delightful introduction to statistics . . . The genius of the book is in its layout . . . The book's good humor, clear prose, and intelligent layout should give it a probability of success with its readers approaching 100%.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A gentle, pleasantly illustrated induction into the strange world of bell curves and chi squares . . . A smart, enjoyable overview of this most useful branch of mathematics.” ―Kirkus

“[The Cartoon Introduction to Statistics] manages to amuse and enlighten . . . Grady Klein's . . . grasp of body language makes [the illustrations] expressive and even charming. He builds a cast of characters including scientists (in white lab coats, of course), worm farmers, dragons, pirates, and more through a blocky approach with extreme variations in line width. The authors hatch some genuinely funny jokes.” ―Paste Magazine

“Working with Dr. Alan Dabney, Klein runs his agreeable little scientist characters through examples of mathematicians using numbers to quantify, analyze, and make decisions . . . The study of statistics is an ideal subject for comics, since the representation of data as graphs and symbols is akin to what cartoonists do: reducing ideas to pictures, for clarity's sake. Klein goes one step further, turning graphs into a collection of tiny drawings: of dragons, of sacks, of boxes, etc.” ―A.V. Club

“Present[s] the basics of how statistics work, how they're generated, what they actually mean, and how they can be manipulated. Klein grounds the whole thing into a narrative-based presentation to keep it from being too dry, and even amusing. Math ‘amusing'? I know, unthinkable! . . . If this is how I learned math, my life would probably be much different.” ―Comic Book Resources

“This book is a perfect treatment for anyone with a phobia of statistics or numbers. It is fun, clear, and wonderfully intuitive.” ―Charles Wheelan, author of Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data

“Thank goodness someone finally wrote a book on statistics that is actually fun to read. Be careful when you buy this book--you might not put it down until you read it all the way to the end.” ―Sebastian Thrun, Google Fellow and CEO of Udacity

“It's a well-kept secret that statistics is fun, relevant to everyone, and intellectually rewarding. Grady Klein and Alan Dabney have let the cat out of the bag with their approachable and humorous journey through the fundamental ideas that make statistics indispensable in today's data-rich world.” ―John Storey, Professor of Genomics and Statistics, Princeton University

Useful and clear
By M. Helmke
The Cartoon Introduction to Statistics teaches the basics of statistics using comics to illustrate various portions of the greater topic. Each chapter in the book covers a very specific facet of statistics, and each of these chapters build upon those that came before it. We start with a nice introduction that gives a high level view of what statistics can do for us and why we should care. This leads into discussions of numbers, random raw data, sorting, sample size, variables, simple and complex analyses, generalizing from a sample to a wider population, parameters and the central limit theorem, normal distributions, probabilities, inference, confidence, hypotheses and testing, and what statistics can and can not tell us (probability vs. certainty). All of the mathematics are contained in the back of the book and are referred to in the text when and where appropriate.

What makes this book stand out are the illustrated examples used throughout the book. Rather than being a book with one main narrative or plot, this is a non-fiction prose book that has occasional illustrated stories used to clarify complex concepts. Some are simple, like talking about how to determine how many fish in a lake fit a certain category. Others are more imaginative, like exploring whether male or female dragon riders are faster while taking into account dragon size. Regardless of whether the examples are more realistic or more whimsical, they are well thought out and useful. The illustrations throughout the book are nicely drawn and consistently appropriate.

This is a worthy entry in the education-focused manga/comic library.

One of the best introductions to Statistics
By AkG
Here's one of the most intuitive book I have ever read on Statistics! I recommend this book to anyone who always had a bad feeling about Statistics.

The book covers some of the very basic elements of Statistics; it does that job wonderfully. It omits the usual techno-jargons, proofs, and other related tables for the sake of clarity. The authors have tried to explain all the concepts without the help of any "pre-required" familiarity with the topic or related topics.

The book has two sections - first section on the basics. It starts with an introduction on why we need statistics (Yes, not because that's a subject in school / college). It then builds up on the requirement of randomness in variable selection and other features of data (only the useful descriptive statistics, not the whole list that we usually find in other 'serious' books. I didn't see 'kurtosis' at all, even though they have used the concept in many places.) and importance of visualising using histograms first and simple examination of data.

Section two covers the application side with examples laid out on what confidence intervals mean, and why we need them. Followed by some fun-filled examples, authors have clearly nailed it. To me, the beauty of the book is clearly the next part, which is on hypothesis testing. The ease with which the authors have explained it, with some of the best illustrations, clearly will help students understand this topic. I've seen how some of the basic and advanced text books have handled this topic, and I feel so relieved that somebody has bothered to explain these in such an easy to understand way. It has covered how HT works, and why it works only under certain conditions.

The book ends with some of the tweaks (or variations) that one can make to cover more application areas. It's followed by a nicely written glossary on all the related basic topics.

Overall, this is clearly a book that every high-school or junior college student should read. It may not cover a lot of ground, but then, that's the beauty of the book, and exactly the point authors tried to make. Once you understand the basics, it's just a matter of tweaking it here and there.

Full disclosure: I borrowed this book from a library out of curiosity, and now, have ordered a copy. I've a Masters level Math/Stats background.

Excellent for introduction to statistics
By John R. Slack
Fun reading and very informative. Excellent introduction of some of the most important principles of statistics. Statistics are used by politicians, businesses, and drug companies many times to try and lead to unwarranted conclusions. This book shows how to use statistics properly and how to judge whether statistics are valid. I would recommend this book to anyone with a curious mind.

'There is a chance to make a travel set and ingenious vertical wall-hanging set. Wonderful!'

by Jim Kape has detailed instructions for making 13 different chess sets as well as a chess board and a storage box. There are full size patterns for the different pieces and the designs range from a classic or traditional set to some unique designs based on the architecture of different cities. For example, the Peter the Great set is based on historic architecture of Russia, the Canterbury is English inspired, and Paris includes the Eiffel Tower as the king. The book also includes a list of tools used and says that the scroll saw and tablesaw are the two most often used. There is even a short history of the game and basic rules of play.

It features illustrations and photos of completed pieces by David Ellsworth, Ron Fleming, Michael Holzapfel, William Hunter, Mark and Melvin Lindquist, Hugh McCay, Edward Moulthrop and Rude Osolnik that reveal the advent of new techniques such as multi-axis turning and the incorporation of secondary materials. The book also examines the history of contemporary wood art through a series of personal essays written by Bell, Renwick's curator. These passages contain insight on the rapid growth of the medium since the 1970s and express how the studio craft movement has shaped the current field. The 193-page hardcover sells for $45. From classical to modern, these chess sets will be cherished for years to come for their heirloom quality and high level of craftsmanship. An introductory chapter familiarizes readers with using a scroll saw and explains how to make compound cuts. The following chapters discuss how to begin making the classic chess set, complete with full step-by-step instructions and photos. There's also a chapter on the history of chess and a section that provides the rules of the game. The author's use of exotic woods and interesting designs are sure to inspire woodworkers, chess players and scroll-saw enthusiasts alike.

Checkmate! Here is a book fit for kings, queens and knights and a book not to be pawned. I, with my sick humor could not work a rook into my diatribe. In any event, this is a fantastic and inspiring book for all woodworkers. In a word, unique! This is perhaps the best way of describing the contents of this book. Author Kape has a great imagination and it is well projected in this fabulous book. There are, as the cover suggests, 15 one-of-a-kind projects for the scroll saw. There is a classic and two neo-classic sets that are close to traditional but certainly unique as cut with the scrollsaw. There is also a set reminiscent of the Knights of the Round Table, a classic Greek set, a Czarist set and an Olde English set. Add these to the architectural collection like Paris, Canterbury, Venice, Rome and San Francisco and you have a fully rounded out chess set collection that is to die for. Now, if you were counting you will realize that the list is short by four. These are made up by the author's plans for a chess board, a travelling chess board, a storage box and a vertical wall mounted chess set. Kape provides the sawyer with full plans and scale drawings for all of the above as well as a full list of materials. As an avid chess player and/or a scroll sawyer you will really appreciate this book.

Making Wooden Chess sets
By EvfromVT
I ordered this book for my husband who does all the scroll sawing in the house because he had seen in a magazine a pattern for a chess set. He decided he wanted to try making one for himself, but the set in the magazine was a little more difficult for his level of expertise, so he wanted to try a simpler one. When we got the book, very speedy shipping by the way, he immeadiately went to town cutting some pieces out. He found the instructions with many pictures VERY helpful in learning how to cut the compound cuts needed to make each piece. Needless to say, he had made his own chess set in a couple of weeks and is now working on several more! I would definately recommend this book to someone who is interesterd in learning a new technique on the scroll saw.

Chess Sets in 3-D
By Robert J. Brousseau
I found this book to be excellent. The paterns are complex and the hints for the builder are also good. Building the chess pieces, however, is not at all easy when using one and a half inch wood.
