Review

One imagines blood in the study. If so, it was worth his pain and our patience. For here at last are no less than three volumes of Rowe's papers, written since 1953...Three volumes are not enough: I want more.

Trailblazer: A Biography of Jerry Brown, by Chuck McFadden

In this first biography of Edmund Gerald Brown Jr. in more than thirty years, Chuck McFadden explores the unique persona of one of the most idiosyncratic politicians in California history. Son of California political royalty who forged his own political style against the tumultuous backdrop of a huge, balkanized state—and shoved to and fro by complex currents—Jerry Brown plumbed his visionary impulses as well as his grandiose ambitions. McFadden traces Brown’s childhood in San Francisco, his time studying for the priesthood, his unusual political career, and his romances—including a long-term relationship with singer Linda Ronstadt. He describes Brown’s first two terms as governor advocating for farm workers, women and minorities, his time roaming the world in a spiritual quest, and his return to the gritty world of politics as chairman of the California Democratic Party and then mayor of Oakland. Political experts weigh in with thoughts about the remarkable 2010 campaign that saw the 72-year-old Brown winning his third term in office while being vastly outspent by Republican Meg Whitman. Concise, insightful, and enlivened by the events and personalities that colored the history of California, Trailblazer provides an intimate portrait of the pugnacious, adept politician who has bucked national trends to become a leader of one of the largest economies in the world.

From Booklist
In 2011, at age 72 and nearly four decades after his first inauguration, Brown made an incredible comeback to be elected the thirty-ninth governor of California. With a reputation as a visionary and a fiscal conservative, could Brown work with an acrimonious state legislature to turn around the state’s abysmal credit rating, high unemployment and foreclosure rates, and a slew of other problems? Veteran reporter McFadden explores what Brown’s election as governor says about him and the state as both face enormous challenges. McFadden recalls Brown’s political heritage, long career in the rough and tumble of politics, failed bids for the presidency, and tenure as mayor of Oakland. McFadden portrays an intellectual man who believes in the power of ideas and the ability of government to deliver on those ideas and a spiritual seeker who studied for the Jesuit priesthood and practices Zen Buddhism. So far as governor, Brown has managed to move contentious Californians to accept modest tax increases. An insightful look at a paradoxical political figure in the nation’s most populous and politically influential state. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"An insightful look at a paradoxical political figure in the nation's most populous and politically influential state."--"Booklist"

"As thoughtful and concise an assessment of this enigma [Jerry Brown] as we're likely to get for a long time."--Peter Schrag"Sacramento Bee" (03/18/2013)

"This examination of the qualities behind Brown's longevity . . . is valuable reading for Californians and non-Californians as the nation finds itself a prisoner of conventional politics, stale thinking and tedious political rhetoric."--Bill Boyarsky"Truthdig" (05/15/2013)

"While McFadden's 180 pages would need to be tripled in length to cover Brown's long career, I have read two other Brown bios and Trailblazer is now the best work available."--Randy Shaw"BeyondChron" (07/11/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“While the details of the governor’s life and career are well known, this book is an invaluable addition to what has been written about him. McFadden’s account of his lifelong intellectual and spiritual growth is detailed and perceptive. As the author points out, this combination of the intellectual, spiritual and political has shaped Brown’s life and explains the contradictions that have long intrigued America.”—Bill Boyarsky, author of Ronald Reagan, His Life and Rise to the Presidency

"A thoughtful and enlightening contribution to the literature on one of California's "most idiosyncratic politicians," this book perceptively analyzes the tensions between the spiritual and the pragmatic that have shaped Jerry Brown's approach to, and philosophy of, governance and politics. McFadden vibrantly and accurately portrays the parallel evolution of California's "new/old governor" and the political system which defines him and which he helped define."—Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, Ph.D., Senior Fellow, Sol Price School of Public Policy

“If you still wonder if Jerry Brown was born on another planet, Chuck McFadden will set you straight, firmly grounding this political enigma in California’s peculiar, 20th century realities."—Joe Mathews, California editor, Zcalo Public Square

"What makes Jerry run? Trailblazer offers a new generation of Californians a fresh and up-to-date look at the many lives, campaigns, and contradictions of their once-was and now-again governor, Jerry Brown—reckless and cautious, spiritual and pragmatic, reformer and status-quo stalwart—in all their chameleon glory."—Mark Paul, co-author, California Crackup: How Reform Broke the Golden State and How We Can Fix It

A new biography serves up Jerry Brown, once over lightly
By Mal Warwick
If you wrote a novel about a guy like this, who was the son of a popular and successful governor; dated a rock star; married for the first time at age 67; twice served as governor of the country's largest state, four decades apart; talked the voters of a notoriously anti-tax state into raising taxes substantially; ran for president three times; spent three years in a Catholic seminary, studied with Zen masters in Japan, and worked with Mother Teresa; and . . . well, you get the point. Would anyone believe this? No doubt they'd think you'd gone, as my British friends say, barking mad.

If, instead, you wrote a biography of this curious phenomenon, you'd need it to be a lot longer than a couple of hundred pages, right? And, of course, you'd need to spend days in face-to-face interviews with the guy, if only to get a solid sense of whether he's for real. How could anyone possibly do justice to him otherwise? Well, Trailblazer is 248 pages long, one-third of them taken up with notes and other backmatter, and the author never managed to interview his subject. That, in a nutshell, is the problem with Trailblazer, Chuck McFadden's new biography from Berkeley's University of California Press of the impossibly self-contradictory Governor Moonbeam.

Don't get me wrong: Trailblazer is a well-informed portrait of our Governor, written by a man who reported on his ups and downs for many years as a Sacramento political reporter for the Associated Press. As an introduction to Jerry Brown for anyone who doesn't remember his early days in politics or is too young to do so, Trailblazer works. McFadden, now retired, retains numerous contacts among the working press in California, whom he quotes extensively in the pages of this book, adding considerable insight. His writing is clear, his understanding of the extraordinarily complex politics of this nation-state is impressive, and he brings the story of Jerry Brown up to the present moment. It's just that a reader would have wished for something more -- something new and fresh that a truly in-depth study of the man's life and work might have brought to light.

If you know little or nothing about our second Governor Brown, you'll learn that he has long been accustomed to being "the smartest guy in the room"; that, as a politician, the fundamental contradiction in his life is the give-and-take between idealism and pragmatism; that the women in his adult life, Linda Ronstadt in the 70s and his wife Anne Gust for the past two decades, have smoothed over the rough edges in his personality and brought a considerable measure of balance and stick-to-it-iveness to his conduct; and that he may well be one of the most skillful politicians this state has ever seen. Is this enough? You be the judge.

Excellent biograghy of Governor Moonbeam!
By Donna Gordon
Chuck McFadden has done an excellent job of capturing the essence of Jerry Brown, and maybe Jerry would agree. Chuck's many years covering California politics make him uniquely qualified to show us every side of this complicated man. A complicated smart man, who fits perfectly with the attributes of the great state of California. Bravo, Chuck McFadden!

Great Intro book.

I love this book, wish I had more time to spend playing the guitar. This is a great intro but not the best.

A great way to Start Classical Guitar
By Phony Money
I have this book but I purchased it elsewhere. Unfortunately for me cause Amazon has it cheaper. Anywho, the tunes a day starts off with some fingering techniques, not exactly classical pieces but basic rhythm with music reading for fingering exercise. However, songs increase in difficulties as you master each song. I love this book because it motivates you to practice practice practice which will result in playing classical guitar. When you complete this book you should be an immediate-beginner player LOL cause mastering classical guitar will take more than this book. Of course, if you wish to only play classical I would probably recommend choosing another book cause this book does not get to complicated with its techniques. Perhaps when book 2 is published it might.

Thus, this book is for those rockers, blues, and jazz players who just want to express themselves in this style without years of studying.

P.S. I noticed 3rd parties are selling this book as if it is out of print and worth millions. LOL. This book is still published and in fact it has been updated with a DVD, Thus, search for the book 1 with CD/DVD set for less than 25.00.

cheers

Selling Your Father's Bones: America's 140-Year War against the Nez Perce Tribe, by Brian Schofield

Part historical narrative, part travelogue, and part environmental plea, Selling Your Father's Bones recounts one of the most astonishing journeys in the history of the American West.

The year 1877 bore witness to a broken promise. Joseph, chief of the peaceable Nez Perce band who made their home in Oregon's Wallowa Valley, had long sworn to uphold the dying words of his father: "This country holds your father's body. Never sell the bones of your mother and your father."

Yet, as the U.S. government confined the tribe to ever smaller reservations in favor of miners and ranchers in their westward sprawl, the fateful decision of several young Nez Perce warriors to attack the settlers set in motion an exodus from Joseph's ancestral home. For the next eleven weeks, seven hundred Nez Perce men, women, and children traveled 1,700 miles across inhospitable wilderness, engaging the chasing army in six battles and many more skirmishes, as they drove on in search of peace and freedom. Just forty miles from the Canadian border, the tribe survived a calamitous five-day siege until Joseph could no longer bear his people's suffering and surrendered. It is said that when he died, in 1904, the cause was a broken heart.

Populated with the heroes and villains of a classic conflict, Selling Your Father's Bones intercuts the Nez Perce's fight for survival with the author's own travels across this very same terrain, the mountains, forests, badlands, and prairies of modern-day Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. The imposing Bitterroot Mountains, the Lolo Pass (then and now among the toughest mountain crossings on the North American continent), and the great Montana buffalo plains retain their majesty. Yet, as Schofield reveals, ecological vandalism, unthinking corporate policies, and dubious political leadership have wrought scarred landscapes, battered communities, and toxic environments whose realities must be borne by the living descendants of both the Nez Perce warriors and the European settlers. As Schofield walks among the people who now occupy these sacred lands, he sees in the values of the Native American West -- love for homeland, for ancestry, and for Mother Nature -- a route to their, and our, salvation.

From Publishers Weekly
This account of the Nez Perc's trials is a painful tale well told. British journalist Schofield writes a history of this Columbia River Valley tribe down to its present-day remnant, confined to a modest Idaho reservation. Casting a wide net, he also describes white settlement in the northwest, emphasizing its devastation of wildlife, soil, rivers and forests. The Nez Perc's troubles began in the 1850s when the U.S. began insisting the tribe make room for white settlers. The author recounts 20 years of coercion and broken treaties until, in 1877 the tribe was ordered out of its homeland entirely. In defiance of the ordered confinement to a Christian reservation, Nez Perc leaders led their people on a heroic flight across Idaho and Montana, inflicting humiliating defeats on pursuing soldiers, but ending in a tragic surrender. America evicted the tribe in favor of that legendary frontier icon, the homesteader, but, ironically, the area is too dry for small farms. Today it consists largely of ranches, timber reserves and irrigated factory farms dependent on government-subsidized water. This is a colorful, action-packed frontier history in which, many will feel, the bad guys won. (Feb.)

From Booklist
The core of travel writer Schofield’s extensively researched historical saga is the arduous trek made by the Nez Perc tribe in 1877 in their attempt to elude the U.S. Army and avoid removal from their homelands. He intersperses and enriches this oft-told account with the lesser-known details of the environmental ravaging of these former Nez Perc lands over the last 140 years. These include the damming of the West from the 1930s on, the depletion of salmon and buffalo, and the tragic logging story, beginning a few years after the Nez Perc were forced off their ancient territory on the Columbia Plateau and continuing to the 1980s, by which time unregulated deforestation had “decimated watersheds and salmon runs,” eroded soils, and precipitated widespread flooding. Schofield deftly juxtaposes specifics from 1877—the settlers on Nez Perc land who later make a fortune taking copper from the Bitterroot Valley—with the modern-day consequences—the toxic-waste dump now surrounding Butte, Montana. Schofield’s illumination of this crucial point in history clearly illustrates the“Manifest Destiny”of 1845’s rescinding of“native, natural stewardship.” --Deborah Donovan

Review
"Genuinely epic." -- "The Sunday Times" (London)

"What can the history of the Nez Perce Indians tell us about today? Brian Schofield's "Selling Your Father's Bones" is a heartbreaking account of their last stand against the U.S. Army, which also examines the ideology behind the conquest of the West and its place in American thinking today. If you want to understand the forces that unleashed the credit crunch, start here." -- Chris Hannan, "The Herald" (Scotland), a Best Book of the Year selection

"It is never dull, politically correct, too late or anything less than shaming and shocking to read about the evils done in the name of European Americans to the indigenous peoples of the northwestern United States. But it takes a book such as this to bring it all together and let you begin to sense the scale of the injustice as Native Americans experienced it....Brian Schofield's heart-rending account is interwoven with contemporary scenes from his researches, in a second-hand van, in the hardscrabble ex-lumber towns of twenty-first-century Idaho. A quiet fury burns through his careful prose." -- "The Times" (London)

"Schofield's book, which is admirably ambitious in scope, could well turn out to be a future classic." -- "Geographical" magazine

"A riveting account of one of the darkest and most misunderstood periods of American history. It should be required reading for anyone who believes that greed and big business are forces for good." -- "The Birmingham" (England) "Post"

Selling Your Father's Bones
By D. Blair
This is alternately a heart-breaking book and an uplifting one. If you study Native American history this is a great book for you, and if you're into things environmental and Native spirituality, it's all in this great book. We had read a review of it in High Country News which is what prompted us to order it. The book arrived in timely fashion and great condition, and it is already being passed on to others here in the heart of Nez Perce country.

Interesting mix of history and environmental issues
By book lover
Real rating: 3.75 stars.
Brian Schofield's book is not just another telling of the Nez Perce War of 1877. That has been done elsewhere, and multiple times, too. Instead the author weaves together the story of the Nez Perce War with what became of the disputed land (and the entire Northwest) since the time that the land was signed away and/or wrested from the native inhabitants; he covers, among other items, water, timber and mining rights. Sometimes the irony is just too much to take, as contemporary whites complain about how they are being wronged, totally forgetting how the Nez Perce and other Indian tribes were wronged in the name of manifest destiny. Recommended, but if all you care about is the Nez Perce War, then read Jerome Greene's Nez Perce Summer and a host of other Nez Perce War books listed here on Amazon. For one of the best ever warrior narratives, read Yellow Wolf by Lucullus McWhorter. Then read it again.
