Great piece of Historical Fiction

This was a really great book that kept me reading for a few days. It really showed me what it was like for a Jewish girl to live through turn-of-the-century Russia. This was a summer reading book for me at school, but I'm certainly glad I read it! I would reccommend this book to any and all who are looking for a great read!

Give it a chance....

I read this book with my 10 year old son for Holocaust Remembrance week although this particular book is not set for the Holocaust I thought this book was a wonderful book to add to our reading during that week because the main idea of the book is about a Jewish family in 1900 that is living a nightmare in Russia under the control of Nicholas the Second a Czar, that either kills Jewish people or makes them serve in the Russian Army to be killed.

The book started extremely slow for both myself and my son. Main character Rachel, doesn't like spending time with her great-grandmother Nana Sashie until her Nana starts telling her the story of her childhood and how she and her family escaped Russia. Very interesting and heart breaking story.

I usually love author Kathryn Lasky's books in fact her Guardians of Ga'Hoole as well as Daughters of the Sea series are so wonderful pulling you in page after page. The Night Journey pushes you away page after page. I mean it does get better as you go along, we gave the book a fighting chance and finished it. However one word OK 2 words will sum this book up for me SLOW and SLOWER.

As not to include spoilers I want to say of course there are sad moments but I wish that there had been more happy ones when it came to present day Rachel and her life, I wish that her and Nana Sashie would have found even more things to talk about besides just this, maybe about Rachel as well.

My son fell asleep easy to this book so if you are looking for a story to put kids to sleep this is a must. HAHA

I admired the education I received from this book, the writing was awesome, some words needed a dictionary for my son but that was just part of the learning. The Night Journey was not awesome but also not the worst I have read for middle grades.

Here's one for the girls. A thirteen-year-old girl dreads the afternoons she must spend with her grandmother until she becomes interested in the tales her grandmother reveals of her past. Give this book a chance, as it does not grab the reader right away. I promise you the story gets better with time...like a strong marriage. [...]

Not a complete collection of temperament theories and findings

Temperament research and models have 3 main approaches:
1 - experimental, when individual differences are traced using experiments on the properties of nervous systems
2 - observations of parents and guardians (developmental psychology approach) - prone to subjective errors
3 - factor-analytic models using lexical descriptors (prone to social bias of language and negativity bias of emotionality - these biases create an illusion that Extraversion and Neuroticism are main dimensions of temperament/personality)
The majority of contributions in this book describes theories from the two last approaches (i.e. less reliable) and almost completely misses the 100-year old tradition of experiments in Eastern Europe, except a brief communication on Strelau's theory. It is a very biased book and misleading for newcomers.

I have used this as a core text for high beginning level reading and writing courses for the past fifteen years. It is an effective course text because it starts at an accessible level for high beginning English language learners and takes them to a low intermediate level by manageable steps. The stories are engaging and introduce students to important American social and historical issues, including women's history, racial issues, and immigrant family life. The book also suggests relevant writing topics.

This book rambles on and on again. The first few chapters are the worst as you go into the other chapters in the book it does get a little better. This book is a prime example, of "people will publish anything for money". Our Professor has requested a new book hopefully a new book author is approved. We had to use this book and it sucked, so I hope the next students won't have too.

Book teaches math skills we all can use

As promised, this book makes math fun. I've been out of college for over 40 years, and I am having a ball with this book. I always liked math, it just did not like me. Learning the math of the Universal Product Code (UPC) and Bank Account Routing numbers was worth the price of the book.

Good overview for the mathematically inclined and non-mathematically-inclined

I really liked this book, even as a mathematics major. It was a great introduction to areas of math I thought I had no interest in as well as a good overview of effective mathematical thinking. After reading this book and taking a course that went along with it I developed a new-found interest in graph theory, which was an area I thought I hated.

If you think you hate mathematics, this is a good book for you. The explanations of seemingly-intimidating concepts are clear and there are lots of explanations of how you see these phenomena in the "real world."

Overall, I highly recommend this.
