A fantastic text for those in the medical field who wish to give evidence-based professional advice on nutrition.

I am a medical student who purchased this book hoping for a professional resource to guide patients toward proper nutrition during sports activities, on specific diets, and during disease states. This book is an excellent resource for this purpose.

Pros:
- Chapters are divided into major diseases by organ or organ system (GI tract contains IBD, celiac sprue, tropical sprue, IBS, diverticulosis; there are separate chapters for pancreatic disease and liver disease, etc.)
- Most major diseases are covered with evidence-based advice using references given at the end of the chapter
- A few guidelines are given at the end of the chapter (only a few, not enough for each disease)
- The pathophysiology is briefly covered for each disease
- Clinical correlations are often practical and current
Cons:
- The book is written in British English, which normally isn't a problem for me, but there seem to be an overabundance of less-than-obvious crossovers ("hypolactasia" rather than lactose intolerance for those of us who spilled the tea into the pond)
- The organ-based divisions could be frustrating to someone without a background which covers the anatomy
- Not all disease systems are covered, but this is an excellent general textbook for understanding

I would also highly recommend the sport and exercise nutrition volume as it does an excellent job of distinguishing evidence-based understanding of nutrition from "bro science" while providing adequate scope and level of detail for most exercise pursuits.
