Milk Diet As A Remedy For Chronic Disease, by Charles Sanford Porter

INTRODUCTION

Milk, and milk products, have been used and highly esteemed as food by all nations possessing mammalian animals since the earliest records of history. At the present time some of the older European countries are consuming two or three times as much milk and cheese per capita, as the United States does.

A good food is a good remedy, and, as disease is only a disturbance of the mechanism of nutrition, it s only natural that the use of milk in ill health should be almost as old as its use as a food in health.

Hippocrates advised consumptives to drink large quantities of asses' milk. Camel's milk, and whey cures were practiced by the Arabian physicians. Homer called the Scythians Galactophagi, or feeders on milk, and Herodotus describes their methods of handling mare's milk.

In recent times the popularization of the milk cure has been largely due to the efforts of

Russian and German physicians. Karrick, Karel, F. von Nicmeyer, Winternitz and Bremer ha,ve advocated it in the treatment of many chronic diseases. In the United States, Donkin, in 1868 called the attention of the medical profession to the fact that diabetes could be cured by large quantities of milk, and said that some cases could take as much as fourteen pints per day. AVeir Mitchell, who has had, perhaps, the greatest experience of any American physician with chronic disease, says: "It is difficult to treat any of these cases without a resort at some time more or less to the use of milk."

The use of milk in the diet for nearly all cases of chronic disease, in advised by all the principal textbooks with which I am familiar. The mistake is made by many of them of combining other foods, even meats and eggs, with milk, and, consequently they usually add the proviso "if it agrees." Very few physicians understand the proper amounts of milk to be given, and the proper way to give it in order to assure assimilation. The method of preparing the patient for the milk diet, and his conduct while taking it, had never been published, that I am aware of, pre-

vious to the printing of the first edition of this work, in 1905.

My first introduction to the possibilities of an exclusive milk diet was in 1884 while living in New York City. A friend was cured completely and permanently of a rather serious condition, by following the advice of a gentleman recently from Germany and familiar with the milk cures practiced there at that time. Other mutual friends adopted the same plan for the relief of various ills, and all with good results. Shortly afterward I took the "milk cure," as we understood it then, for a condition bordering on nervous prostration. I not only overcame that condition, but was cured of.hay fever which had claimed me as an annual victim for seven or eight years, but has never since returned.

From that time to the present, I have never ceased to advocate the milk cure, and, of the thousands of cases of chronic disease that have taken the treatment in the manner I recommended, I do not know of one person who has regretted it; I do not know of one that was not benefited.

Such remarkable results' have, of course, resulted in extending the treatment through-

out the country. Many physicians, and some sanitariums, have endeavored to use the method. I regret that many, if not all of these, have made changes in the original plan, which was apparently too simple. Very many times doctors and other patients under my care have advised me to add something to the milk, or to the method of giving it, in order to make the process more mysterious, and more attractive to many people, and more lucrative to myself. They said that people who had suffered for years without relief, traveling to many health resorts, and to noted specialists, taking expensive and elaborate treatments, would not easily be induced to use a method apparently o simple as to be within the reach of almost every person, or household, without expert advice.

While admitting the force of ...

Milk Diet: Remedy for Illness
By Family Man
After reading this book, I tried the Milk Diet. It is a step by step description of how to do it, written by a doctor in the early 1900's. He was successful in curing many kinds of illnesses in the body: lowering blood pressure, cleaning out the digestive system ( I was able to get rid of "geographic tongue" after three weeks on the diet.) You have to be dedicated to doing the diet just as described. You drink 5 to 7 ounces of raw milk every half hour from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm. You're never hungry but the hope of getting well is a great incentive.

Tried it and it works!

A friend of ours revised the book by Dr. Porter, (The Milk Diet) we bought a copy from her and started on it. My husband has been on the diet for five weeks already and is doing great! Not only has his blood pressure gone down from 285/135 just before Christmas to 144/98 after four weeks on the diet. We read the book (which we recommend doing before starting the diet) and then used fermented raw milk (Keifer)instead of the plain raw milk. I mixed it in the blender with two droppers full of Vanilla Cream Stevia. I tastes great and keeps him feeling full.

He has had other healing benefits from it also and feels so good that he has decided to stay on it until his blood pressure reading is at a normal level. During the first four weeks he lost 28 lbs. He has not eaten anything while on the diet, but after the four weeks has added an evening meal of salads. We highly recommend doing the diet. It is good for any age and we will soon have three family members on it.

Not recommended for doing the milk diet, but has some interesting info
By Health Foodie
I wanted to try the milk diet, so I bought the kindle book. First of all, the kindle edition has not been properly done. There are scrambled letters and words throughout the whole book...too many to count. Some of them are several words together, so that I could not decipher what was being said.

As for the content, the writing style is protracted, due to the style of that era. I found some of it laborious. The treatment plan is not practical for the average person who wants to improve their health. He states that one needs complete bed rest, getting up only for the warm baths and bathroom activities. You must change your sleep gown twice a day and air out the sheets on a daily basis. He discourages talking, even. Cannot sit up in bed and can only read for 10 min. at a time with rest in between. He is very strict about these rules. No one can do this, unless you are in a milk diet sanitarium where they wait on you hand and foot or you have someone who is willing and able to do this for you. I know of no such sanitarium today. Granted...the book was written for sanitariums, so I understand, but for me, the average person who lives at home with a family...unless one is bed-ridden to begin with, it is an impossible feat.

The worst aspect of the book is this:
Although he goes into great detail about various matters pertaining to the milk diet, I was very disappointed to get to the chapter about how to return to eating regular food and he made no recommendations whatsoever!! This was quite shocking!! How could he just leave the reader in the lurch about this most crucial aspect???!! If one does not practice the correct way to gradually return, one can do more harm than all the good derived from the milk diet! I found the book good for the anecdotal stories and learned some things about digestion and milk, but not enough to give it a higher rating..

If you are interested in doing the milk diet, I recommend going to milk-diet.com. They use a book by McFadden that is free to read online. His method is much more practical and he outlines exactly how to proceed with the diet in a clear-cut and concise manner. He discusses how to return to a normal diet and also explains how to deal with adverse reactions while on the diet, which Porter did not.

I did the diet myself using the McFadden book, for the above reasons. I feel much better after my 14 day milk fast. A lot more energy and more clear-headed.
