A very exciting book!

The tension builds from the start as the terrorists make their way to Arlettsville, Texas, to assassinate the Senator. And the local sheriff there, who has never faced anything like this before in his life, has to rise to the occasion. It's more complex than that, but I don't want to give it away, but I enjoyed every page, and couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it.

*Starred Review* A voyage around terra firma constitutes a unique category of travel, recognized as such since Magellan’s surviving sailors completed their globe-girdling accomplishment in 1522. Chaplin coins an evocative term for epics of circumnavigation, geodrama, the script of which she divides into three acts. The first covers the three centuries following Magellan, when mariners wrapped the world in European networks of trade and empire. Whatever one thinks about imperialism, its political coherence raised the curtain on geodrama’s second act of the nineteenth century, when circling the planet became an enlivening individual challenge, not the virtual condemnation to death that it had been from Magellan to Cook. Indeed, Jules Verne’s hero Phileas Fogg inspired Chaplin to do the research for this work; Fogg winning his bet and his girl epitomizes the personal motivations for globe-trotting. Ocean liners and airlines later democratized the circumnavigational experience and, jettisoning scurvy, furnished it with champagne. Chaplin writes that the confidence this gave that the earth was embraceable and humanity unifiable evaporated with colonialism, to be succeeded by the anxieties of geodrama’s third act, the space age. Spaceships, like sailing ships, were dangerous, and their passengers’ view of the entire planet evoked worries for its fate, environmentally and politically. Joyce E. Chaplin is the James Duncan Phillips Professor of History at Harvard University. She is the author of four previous books of nonfiction, including The First Scientific American: Benjamin Franklin and the Pursuit of Genius (2006), a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize (Science and Technology Category), and winner of the Annibel Jenkins Prize of American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

Round About the Earth is the perfect book for someone who likes both history and travel. It is a highly readable account of circumnavigation. It goes into the details of each expedition as well as background social and political issues without becoming boring. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history and travel and who is curious about the world around them.

Take a Trip Around the Globe of the Past

There have been many books written about the notorious explorers from history, like Columbus, Magellan, Cook and even Darwin. There are also now a fair number of people who can make the claim that they have circumnavigated this globe. Joyce E. Chaplin presents readers with the first full history on those who have traveled around the world and told their story.

Divided into sections, Chaplin presents the series of historical tales starting with Magellan, giving the ups and downs of the journey. She points out that it wasn’t until the twentieth century that these round-the-world trips actually returned to their starting point with most of the crew still alive. All the greats make it into this book, such as Francis Drake, William Dampier, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, and James Cook. When sea travel became safer, people like Charles Darwin made the journey, as well as some notable women like Lady Brassey.

With the advent of encompassing railroad travel and exotic cruise ships, round the world journeys became much more achievable and common for a lot of people. And with the advent of the space race, a new concept of circumnavigating the globe came into play, with an elite few achieving it. Chaplin has fun exploring these many journeys and why people seem driven to accomplish it. While her writing can get a little dry and long-winded at points, Round About the Earth still represents an interesting foray into this unique group of travelers.

Great read - not your normal review of history

Bought this book to first read then give to my parents as they have circumnavigated the world twice on cruise ships.
I really liked the attention to the social framework and interconnectednesss of all the attempts through the ages. The author's research provided some enlightning details that made the read that much more interesting.

ablo Romero-Fresco is a Senior Lecturer in Audiovisual Translation at Roehampton University, London, UK. He has worked as a respeaker for the National Gallery in the UK and has provided respeaking training to different universities and companies around the world. As a member of the research group TransMedia Catalonia, he has published and carried out research on dubbing, subtitling and audio-description, and has coordinated the subtitling part of DTV4ALL, an EU-funded research project exploring the possibility of providing a common standard for Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Europe.

Worth it for just one book!

Here is a collection of three of Marc Behm's work and it isworth purchasing just for the excellent 'Eye of the Beholder'. Aninsane, funny and touching novel about a Private Detective (referred to as the 'Eye') obsession with a female serial killer. For over a decade, the Eye protects the woman, who is unaware that she has a guardian angel. Following the protaganists for over a decade, Behm's narrative holds your attention as he describes the Eye's fragmenting mental state when confronted with infatuation and desire. Ignore the recent Ewan McGregor/Ashley Judd film and read the book.
I wish I could say the same for Queen of the Night but I found it quite distasteful. It is the story of a woman who gets mixed up with the Nazi party during WW II. Maybe it does say something about the psychology of the German psyche but I found it bordering on cheap porn. Maybe for those who like watching dubious films like Helga: She Wolf of the SS.
The Ice Maiden is a story about a Vampire who works as a Croupier. Originally published in French, this was its first English language release.
